Feast your ears on this crazy 3080 tuf coil whine

Since Asus ignores my case through their tech support I will post my findings here in case anyone else is interested in reproducing.

Notes: fluctuations in coil whine, translates to stutters/frame drops

How to reproduce:
This extreme coil whine happens under specific conditions.
1) Download https://www.videohelp.com/software/LAV-Filters-Megamix
2) During installation, select potplayer and madvr 4k profile
3) Open lav video decoder settings, enable Nvidia Cuvid for H/A.
4) Play back a hevc 10 bit video or find any video which will cause gpu utilization to reach ~90%.
5) Listen for coil whine. Notice the noise amplifying when changing to full screen.

Please let me know of your results if you decide to give it a go.

Well excuse me mr.expert if this is the first time I hear a coil whine that bad coming from any electronic component in my pc and I've owned many high end gpus mind you. As soon as ti comes out I'm selling this one and I'll be back with new test results probably not from an asus gpu this time.

i dont think that is coil whine but the fan hitting the shroud due to gpu sag. it is also present in strix 3080 and 3090 as well. certainly manufacturing /QA problem (that card is heavy )

The only way for coil whine reduced noise experience, this is the card to have large number of power stages.
By this way the electrical load at its coil this is reduced.

Oh yes you are talking with one electronic repairs specialist and not with a farts making specialist.

Why do you think it's not coil whine? I've personally stopped every single fan in my pc and the noise remains. Also if you watch the video you'll see that the sound instantly becomes louder when switching to full screen. That my friend is coil whine no matter what you may think.

My rtx 3080 strix sings like this, and many of my friends' cards also crow like this. Will Asus make a fix for these?

I am having the same issue with my 3090 TUF OC. I submitted a service ticket and they asked me to make sure my PSU was compatible. LMAO. I have a 1000 Watt EVGA SuperNOVA P2, but I did try out their suggestion and bought a GX-850 Seasonic, whine persists. I then completely changed out the MOBO and CPU, whine persists.

What is frustrating is I had no issues for the first week of ownership. Sadly, if ASUS doesn't RMA I'll just return it to Micro Center where I got it.

I do have one strange anomaly, when in game I have the whine regardless of FPS. However, when running Time Spy Extreme in 3DMARK I get no coil whine.

Oof. I'm astonished that you actually took asus's advice on this. Even changing the mobo, that's must have cost you a lot. With that said, thank you for letting everyone know. And yes your issue is peculiar but mine is as well. I'm just waiting for 3080ti to be released so I can sell this card.

I don't doubt that you are. So asus couldn't afford more power stages at this price tag? And no, this is not a small annoyance having a tractor sound coming from my rig.

Speaking of expectations everything is possible for addition of more power stages but the card length will become one meter long.

In other words you may not expect a racing car engine to sound as 1200cc FIAT of your father.
Practical solution this is placing the PC at the floor and away of your bed.
