ASUS GTX 770 OC 4GB - driver failure? (solid color or flashing display crash)

Hey everyone, thanks in advance for reading this - it's been a frustrating past day or so trying to deal with this issue; I'll try to give all the details I have regarding this problem but I'm sure I'll forget to add something, so just let me know if I forgot something critical!

I have the GPU stated above. I built a new rig on Friday and went through the Windows installation on Saturday. All was dandy until I (in hindsight, stupidly) took the CD that came with the GPU and inserted it into my disk reader. I'm not sure what exactly happened, but this coincided with the first incident of the problem I'm now struggling with. Basically, display output (through HDMI) to my monitor craps out, sometimes by outputting a single, seemingly random solid color (it was usually red or a shade of blue at first, now sometimes it just turns to black) or a flashing screen. The first few times I had this problem, I didn't think it was a big deal, because upon rebooting I was able to get past the logon screen and actually function for a reasonable amount of time (2 hours?) before the problem happened again. Another crash occurred, for instance, not while playing a game, but right after I exited the game window.

Now, however, I'm not even able to get on to Windows - the problem usually occurs right after I sign on. It says "Welcome," and then outputs the crash screen almost immediately afterwards. I tried un- and re-installing the drivers while using integrated graphics on my i7-4790k (which worked for a while, but for some reason is now not outputting...), which did not solve the problem. I used Display Driver Uninstaller a couple of times as well. Installing previous drivers did not help, either. At this point, I was able to run in Safe Mode, but after the integrated graphics stopped outputting to the display, I wasn't able to boot to SM.

A few hours ago, I re-installed Windows, which allowed me to successfully operate again. The first thing I did was install the GPU drivers, via Windows Update. As soon as I restart, bam, the problem returns. I've googled this issue, and it seems like several people with this specific GPU have also had this problem, but it's unclear to me how to solve it. It looks like people with the 2GB version of the card updated the GPU's BIOS and that solved it, but there is no BIOS update for the 4GB version.

Any help would be much, much, much appreciated!

Wait, the OCZ woman told you that if the first replacement was dead, that was it? I don't understand the logic behind that.

Yeah, that's what I'm definitely going to do. I looked into updating the vROM and I don't actually think it's possible at the moment given the major system instability. Do you know if shipping is covered by ASUS as well with cross-ship?

Normally when doing an rma you pay to ship it to them and they cover the shipping back, I've never did an RMA with asus. knock on wood.

I have with EVGA, 8800GTX decided it wanted to display lines instead of a picture.

I have with OCZ, my SSD died and they replaced it. I also ordered the ocz cryo-z, a phase change cooler. It arrived dead, this is the only thing I ever ordered that was doa. The rep said she could send me another one but if it arrived defective or dead there would be no refund or replacement, so I said no thank you and went with what I have now Koolance ERM-2k3u.

yep the first one arrived dead so I called them and she said she could send me another one but if it arrived defective or doa, no refund or replacement. so I played it safe and said no thank you. yeah they probablty lost a salebut it's ok, I don't know how that would have worked out for everyday use. I think it is just as well because I didn't do anything to the motherboard except put the insulation around the freezer head and I know condensation and possibly freezing the board would happen soooo... It's just as well I think.

Another reason for doing the cross ship is you know you won't be receiving the same card back.

Yeah, really no reason to risk it with a policy like that.

I talked to a service rep this morning and the cross ship just needs to be approved now. i.e. checking to see if the card is in stock, hopefully it is! I have a (maybe irrational) feeling that it won't be, but I'm probably just expecting the worst given the ASUS RMA horror stories that seem to be everywhere on the web. We'll find out soon enough.

Alright, just thought I'd pop in with a quick update (unfortunately none of this will involve actually receiving a new card yet...):

Long story short, I requested a cross-ship RMA two weeks ago, and was told I would get a response in 24-48 hours as to whether or not ASUS had the card in stock. Fast forward a few days and I still haven't heard back, so I contact ASUS and ask what's going on. They tell me that I'll hear back "early next week." Come Wednesday and I still haven't heard anything, so I contact them again via online chat. The guy tells me that there's been no word still, but when I press him further on it he says he'll be right with me. A few minutes later, he tells me that the card is indeed in stock and proceeds to send me the cross-ship forms in which I fill out my payment information. At this point, I'm hopeful that this will resolve satisfactorily, even if it might take a few days.

Fast forward to about 30 minutes ago, and I receive an email from a woman working at ASUS informing me that the card is *not* in stock, and telling me to submit a standard RMA request instead. I really don't like complaining, but are you kidding me? After all this effort and being mistakenly informed that the card was indeed in stock, this is ridiculous.

I'm still grateful you brought the possibility of a cross-ship RMA to my awareness, Nate - my anger is solely directed towards ASUS 😛

Also, I've talked with several people who have had the same issue with this card recently. It's amazing that it continues to be sold despite it being nonfunctional out of the box for pretty much everyone...if the RMA does not fix the problem, would it be unreasonable to ask ASUS to replace it with a product that actually functions, at least until they fix the firmware issue?
