1080 Ti Strix OC Horrible Coil Whine!!! (yep another case)

I Decided to get the 1080 ti strix oc even though I have read a lot of them have coil whine

I have now an infernal noise in my computer coming from the gpu.

Why almost all of them have it? is it because asus automatic gpu productions?

The card itself works fine but that noise is just ridiculous on a $800 gpu. not even a free game with it right now.

There are a lot report on this, will asus find out if something can be done ?

If I send it back , will I get a new boxed one or another coil whine return? which they must have a lot.

I don't want to play the let me send back 5 cards game , till I get one that doesn't have it. asus should test gpu a lot better.

Yes , I know most gpu gets coil whine but this one takes the cake. never heard such horrible noise from a gpu before. plus there are too many reports with this particular card. 😞

There's a special silent BIOS for the Strix GTX 1080 Ti at the support page. You can try it to see if it gets better.

Thanks for the response, I did try all possible fan speeds which is basically what that bios does. and the coil still present.

I still wonder why all these card get it so badly. I like asus one that is the reason I pick that one. Quality seems good but still gets that horrible noise!

I am playing mafia 3 (full settings) card does 1949 mhz stable there all the time with the OC profile, fan at 47% temps around 67C is that ok , average, good?

I am also waiting to see if noise goes away. Is that even possible? did anyone with coil whine ever got the coil noise away after?

Maybe not all but there are a lot reports online forums and youtube. and it's the same exact coil noise you heard in those youtube videos.

Also keep in mine that at certain fan speed it may not be so loudly, also depends how many openings your computer case have! the coil may not be immediately annoying to hear. I also have seen some reporting not coil whine and few days after they heard it. I one of those cases, I didn't pay much attention to it at first
but now it's just annoying. Fan at 36% is fine not noise but after the fan start kicking above the 40% then that noise comes up! and like I said , so many with the same problem or annoyance I wonder why is happening more frequently to the strix and if asus is investigation and can discover something that can help us!

What PSU are you running? As a "retired" system builder, I sometimes found PSU/GPU combinations that produced more whine then when paired differently. I also know that a very high quality PSU can diminish whine on power hungry, whine prone cards.

You may not want to hear this, but that PSU is not a top end model. Unlike the rest of the SuperNova series that are known for very high quality materials and construction, the NEX650/750 are built by a different EVGA partner with lower quality components. The 12V rail in particular has quite a bit of sag. The NEX750G is not a bad PSU, just not one of the better ones, and has mediocre performance.

I am not saying that your PSU is causing the whine, but with that particular unit it is possible that it contributes to the whine issue.

I agree with mdzcpa's assessment, you should definitely try another PSU before being certain the coil whine is an issue directly with the graphics card.

Hello, thanks for the response guys.

However I tested the card in my friend's computer and it's definitely the card make the noise. I also tested his card 1080 ti non asus in my pc = not coil whine but I know it's just luck ! as all brands can have it but it seems the strix is more suggestive to have it for some reasons!

if you check youtube, it's the same exact noise as all those videos. and in a lot online forums people are reporting the same with this card.

Perhaps I will change the psu but not for the coil noise as I already know for sure is the GPU doing it.

Anyways I read about GPU burn in? if there is such thing? , I will try to use it a lot this week and see if noise goes away , wish me luck!!
