XMP Issue After Updating to BIOS 1203 on ROG Maximus Z890 Hero

Hi everyone,

I’m running into an issue with my ROG Maximus Z890 Hero motherboard after updating to BIOS version 1203. My CPU is an Ultra Core i9-285K, and I’m using 2x48GB Corsair 6400MHz CL32 DIMMs (CMP96GX5M2B6400CL32).

Previously, on BIOS version 1101, I was able to enable XMP without any stability problems. However, since installing BIOS 1203, I can no longer activate XMP without running into errors. The system either hangs at Q-Code 61 or crashes shortly after the POST. If I disable XMP, the system appears stable and boots into Windows without issues.

I have tried reverting back to BIOS 1101, and as expected, I can enable XMP again and everything works fine. Has anyone else encountered this problem after updating to BIOS 1203?

Thanks in advance!

Having the same issue as soon as I updated to 1203 on my z890 Strix E. I now have to reduce the XMP speed in the bios in order for it to run correctly.

Same here..way to go intel and asus. As if the last 3 generations of chips haven't all had issues. Thanks for making our lives difficult and lining your pockets ASUS and Intel. Very disappointed.

The only difference with me is I'm using an 8800 G Skill CUDIMM kit that is compatible with the Z890 Strix E but isn't stable with the 1203 update when using any stock XMP settings.

I have cudimm gskill 9600. Ever since i changed to this memory is when issues all started really badly. Wonder if its a bios issue with cudimm

Did you check that memory on the memory support section with the approved versions?   It may still work, but something to think about.

Have you tried selecting XMP II, assuming the firmware update does not change that option?

Maximus Z890 Hero,
Intel Core Ultra 9 285K

Yes, I checked it was on the compatibility list and it was working on XMP 2 until I updated the bios to 1203. I also have the Dimm Flex option enabled.

I have the same issue with the Asus Rog Extreme motherboard.  Worked fine with 1101.   I am using Corsair Vengeance 6800 ram.  It is not on the approved list and was told when reported it that they are working on updating micro code and this is to be excepted when I new motherboard comes out and can take 3 to 6 months before all the issues are worked out with ram issues.  I was able to get it to work downgrading the ram to 6200 using the XMP tweaked profile and using AI overclocking on the CPU.  I also verified the ram issue is independent of CPU over clocking and is speed of the ram that is not playing nice with the motherboard.

Zero issues with 1203. Using a Hero + 285K with: G.SKILL Ripjaws S5 Series (Intel XMP 3.0) DDR5 RAM 96GB (2x48GB) 6400MT/s CL32-39-39-102 1.35V Desktop Computer Memory UDIMM - Matte Black (F5-6400J3239F48GX2-RS5K). XMP Tweaked profile. CR1. Running rock solid in Prime95. Check your temps and voltages. Geekbench: 3450 (single), 24284 (multi). Latency is bad: 80ns.

Waiting for 96GB 9200 MHZ CUDIMM's. Corsair's press release outright lies about the 96GB CUDIMM kit - biggest size available is presently 48GB. Probably going to be a long time before that gets released AND is stable on the Hero. CL is also high on the CUDIMMs.

I purcased Asus strix Z890 E Gaming, 285k, corsair ddr5 8000 cl38 48GB. I also upgraded to bios 1203 but xmp works fine. I also ran a mem86 test and passed.
