XMP Issue After Updating to BIOS 1203 on ROG Maximus Z890 Hero

Hi everyone,

I’m running into an issue with my ROG Maximus Z890 Hero motherboard after updating to BIOS version 1203. My CPU is an Ultra Core i9-285K, and I’m using 2x48GB Corsair 6400MHz CL32 DIMMs (CMP96GX5M2B6400CL32).

Previously, on BIOS version 1101, I was able to enable XMP without any stability problems. However, since installing BIOS 1203, I can no longer activate XMP without running into errors. The system either hangs at Q-Code 61 or crashes shortly after the POST. If I disable XMP, the system appears stable and boots into Windows without issues.

I have tried reverting back to BIOS 1101, and as expected, I can enable XMP again and everything works fine. Has anyone else encountered this problem after updating to BIOS 1203?

Thanks in advance!

I am using the Z890 Extreme motherboard and not the Hero version.  Could also be the type of ram you are using.  I am using the Corsair Vengeance  64gb (2x32) 6800Mhz  CMK64GX5M2X6800C32 ram and it's not on the approved list of ram.  The only version I see on the list at 6800 is the Dominator CMT ram and the heat spreaders are too tall for the cooler on the CPU and have always had luck with the Corsair Vengeance  CMK ram in the past.

I have the exact same RAM (Corsair 2x 32GB at 6800MHz with 32CL, actually one of the best I could found) and I also had issues with activating any XMP Profile under my ROG Maximus Z890 Hero. But I did what was suggested here:

I changed from A1/B1 to A2/B2 and it worked. Only problem will be if i want ever to upgrade to 4x 32GB 😄

It works on 1302 without problem now. I have that kit as well

I'm going to get an 8200 mhz kit and see if that works.

I have an 8200 CL38 kit (24gb udimm sticks) i will update to latest z890 Hero bios in a few hours and report back

This is the kit I ordered it's a G Skill CL 40 and I have the strix e z890

I have the asus rog strix z890-e 285k, corsair ddr5 Dominator 8200 running 8400 dimm fit.  I just updated to bios 1302, it's stable but my latency on my memory went from 80ns to 90ns which kinda sucks.

Hello, I have been testing and I am back to 80ns my memory.  Everything is working as expected so far. I upgraded from an I9 9900k z390 board 6 years so my performance went did go up as time goes on we my get a little more. My son wants me to test out a amd 9800x3d.  I have been partial to intel. Of course I started back with Tandy computers the rest is history. So I agreed to help build a system and test to the full extent. So with that being said he has a Asus rog strix x870-I gaming wifi, 9800x3d, gskill neo ddr5 6400 cl30. I will but not own for now.

Just got this kit today, 2x24 gig in A2 B2 slots, F5-8200C4052G24GX2-TZ5CRK and it seems to be running fine now with current BIOS (1302), and it was able to pass a mem test so far whereas my previous 8800 kit was not. So far, the RAM seemed to be the issue although both kits are compatible with my Strix E Z890 and 285K. c

Hello, I am glad it worked for you. I also found certain kits above 8400 even though there on the GVL may not be stable.
