ASUS Strix Z890-a Won't Post

I am experiencing an issue with my Strix Z890-A motherboard. When booting, the red QLED indicator briefly lights up, followed by the orange QLED remaining illuminated for approximately 10 seconds. After that, all QLED indicators turn off, and the display remains blank.

To troubleshoot, I have tried the following steps:

  • Reseating the CPU
  • Testing all four RAM slots
  • Checked power connectors
  • Clearing CMOS
  • Using BIOS Flashback
  • Attempting both onboard DisplayPort and HDMI outputs
  • Testing the DisplayPort output on my GPU

Hello N2TheRed

Sounds like either a memory issue or a gpu issue.

Try this:

1) Shut down your pc and unplug the power supply cable.

2) Install 1 stick of memory in the A2 slot (2nd slot from the cpu).

3)  Try Displayport with the cpu graphics or your gpu.

4) Make sure your monitor is turned on or in standby mode.

5) Press and hold the clear cmos button for 3 seconds.

6) Try booting up your pc.

If this doesn't help, I'd like to confirm if the bios flash was successful.

I've done all of those multiple times.  I tried bios flashback with the latest bios, but it never took.  The second to the latest appeared to work.  Three slow green flashes then quick flashes for several minutes before going dark.

Thank you

Taking a few minutes sounds like the bios update was successful.

A2 is the recommended slot for a single memory stick, be sure to use this slot.

Maybe try flashing the bios again to see if it helps.

To confirm you're doing it correctly (which I feel confident you are), I recorded a video.

Delete everything off your usb flash drive and have only the bios file on it. Once you have the bios file renamed and on your usb flash drive, try Bios Flashback again.

Thanks for taking the time to make the video Nate.  The way you showed in the video is how I did it.

I'm going to try the bios flashback again, but this time with the latest bios version.  I'm waiting on thermal paste which will be here tomorrow and will try again then.

I did notice the ram stick I have is not on the QVL list and so getting one that's on the list should rule out that.

You're welcome

I'm wondering this.

If you're waiting on thermal paste, are you sure your cpu isn't overheating and shutting down your pc?

If your pc isn't shutting down, see how flashing the latest bios goes.

Or you can wait until you get other memory to try.

I had a cooler on it but swapped it back to the one I'm using now.  I'm going to try again tomorrow.

I had similar issues with a new build.

There are two things I would try:

  1. Make sure your CPU cooler is not too tight (this could cause issues with booting)
  2. With my MOBO all recommended RAM configurations do NOT work. The only way my PC will boot is by using B1 and B2. This is worth trying, I know it's not a solution but an odd workaround I found while trying to get 4 sticks of RAM to work with my PC
