Z790 ROG 1801 BIOS

Hey guys,

I have on my Z790-E ROG STRIX mobo 1303 BIOS.

I am thinking to update BIOS to new 1801 version. I have 2 questions:

Will work my 1303 .CMO settings file on new 1801 version? I really dont wanna enter hundred of parameters again manually.

Is 1801 good BIOS to update? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I have just updated it. I don't know why, but when my monitor is attached to my graphics card, the BIOS menu works very slowly(very slow menu switches). But if it is attached to CPU graphics, it is OK.

Hello @skywalkerx @arlicht

Maybe i can answer ur both questions. I would not advise to load "old" CMO files after flashing ur bios. I flashed to 1801 and my menu is smooth as before. I did not load my old CMO and set all settings manually. In further time i also had the problem with very slow menu switches as i loaded my old CMO.

So @skywalkerx if u loaded ur old settings via CMO then flash again (or reset) and then make ur settings manually 🙂

I actually did load the optimized defaults, but the problem continued. However, I was able to solve it by switching back and forth between iGPU and discrete graphics card. Something is wrong with the initialization of the PCIE graphics I believe it is not specific to 1801. Most of the time, I don't get the image until Windows boot unless I restart after Windows boot also on previous BIOS versions. It deserves another thread on its own. It's a pretty common problem I believe, but I'm not sure who to blame.
Nvidia says it is something to do with SBIOS. But I also have a Samsung G8 OLED. Tbh Samsung's firmware is also very buggy, which might be related to that, but it works okay with iGPU. But I had a problem with my old monitor, Gigabyte AD27QD, and MSI Z390 Tomahawk with RTX 2080. Which makes it very hard to track.

No joke, this new 1801 bios is rock solid. I no longer have to disable PCIE power management. My ram works out of the box with xmp 2 at stock 7200mhz. I have Team Group t force sticks. I did a 24hrs stress test with Karhu and it passed! Temps were getting a bit hot so o just added two 92mm fans. I also raised my computer by about one inch off the table by adding some wedges. Now I am going to start another stress test and see if I can do another 24hrs with lower temps.

So does older cmo files work or is this function still broken?

Updated the bios of my Z790 Extreme from previous version 1303 to 1801. Everything is stable.

I recommend not loading old CMO files. With each new bios version, the database is deleted during the update. So once updated you have to enter your parameters manually.

There are new parameters about this new version 1801 compared to the old 1303.

Not much point to CMO files if you can't use them for updates.

There's plenty. Most vendors don't even allow you to cross use profiles at all.

CPU ucode and BIOS layouts change, they can't always be cross compatible. Moreover, why even update if one is so confident the saved profile doesn't need to be improved upon. It's incredibly useful for retaining known good overclock of memory parameters and switching between OC profiles when tuning, or when having to utilise Flashback to revert back to previous builds.

In the time you've wasted with the fixation on wanting to crossload CMOs you could have easily rebuilt ones for newer builds.

So neither does Asus, since the feature doesn't work.

Microcode has nothing to do with it (go ahead and read the microcode changelogs) and if layouts change it's trivial to map old to new.

Any discussion with you is utterly pointless though.
