Z790 Maximus Extreme + 7200MT/s DDR5 Instability

I am experiencing stability issues when using the F5-7200J3445G16GX2-TZ5RK sticks on an Asus Z790 Maximus Extreme when running the DIMMs on their XMP I or II profile. These instabilities can be any of the following:

- random PC reboots when idle or stressed
- WHEA event code 17 in Windows event viewer
- PCIe device and/or PCIe bus errors

When running the F5-7200J3445G16GX2-TZ5RK sticks without the XMP I or II profile, the rig boots but obviously at default clockspeeds for the RAM.

Here are the specifications of my rig (except for the 2nd kit of DIMMs, currently running only 2 DIMMs in slot A2 and B2) : https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MjQJW4 . BIOS and MEI have been updated to their latest version. Windows 11 22H2 with a fresh (yesterday) Media Creation, standard installation no GPO's or anything. Running without Antivirus, and Memory Isolation is disabled (required for Intel XTU Tool).

I am currently running the same rig with the F5-6000J4040F16G (slower and looser timings) and that's perfectly stable (I can torture the rig with Techpowerup's Memtest64 without error) and run any benchmark and get consistant results. Performance is awesome 🙂

I'm wondering if anyone has an idea what the issue could be. As far as I'm concerned, this should all work "nearly out of the box" (aka: set XMP and done) and I shouldn't have to fiddle around with the gazillion memory tweaking options, should I? 🙂

To fix the WHEA Logger errors try disabling PCI express power management in the bios and in In Windows under advanced power settings turning PCI Express Link State Power Management to Off.

Native Power management is already disabled - it doesn't make any difference for the stability with the 7200MT/s DDR5 ram, it stays unstable with the fast ram, and with the same settings it's rock solid with the slower ram.Â*

What CPU?

Firstly try

Adding 20-30mV to VDD / VDDQ

Tuning CPU System Agent: 1.05 - 1.3v (progressively 20-30mv increments, more voltage can hurt on this rail)

Memory Controller Voltage (Advanced Memory Settings): 1.25 - 1.45v

Applying Tweak modes 1 and 2
13900KS / 8000 CAS36 / ROG APEX Z790 / ROG TUF RTX 4090

i9-13900K at stock speeds (AI overclock disabled in BIOS)

I have already tried to:
- set PMIC voltages from "sync all PMICs" to "By per PMIC"
- set DRAM VVD Voltage to 1.3
- set DRAM VVDQ Voltage to 1.3

But the rig is also unstable then, sometimes it doesn't even boot. Â*Â*

I haven't tried to set the memory controller voltage or the system agent, will try that today! Â*

Have you installed a cpu contact frame? When installing the CPU did you bend any contacts?

Make certain you completed the installation process correctly and in order:

1) Install MEI drivers latest
2) Install ME firmware latest
3) Install Bios Z790 Extreme latest

One Thousand Dollar motherboard! Sheesh. :rolleyes:

I feel really bad for these Extreme guys, this shouldn't be happening. 😞

What is a CPU contact Frame?

I installed the 13900K to the motherboard's socket, then installed the Asus Ryuo III 240mm cooler - all as described in the manual, nothing was damaged during the installation. Â*I'm not sure if this has anything to do with anything, if there was a bent pin on the LGA1700, I'd have crashes and instability even with slower DDR5.

Again: the rig is rock solid stable with 6000MT/s cl40 DDR5 ram, it's unstable with 7200MT/s cl34.

MEI drivers - this is in Windows? Anyway, I have installed the Intel Management Engine Interface V2240.3.4.0(SW 2242.3.34.0) For Windows 10/11 64-bit. - versionÂ*2240.3.4.0.
Latest BIOS 0703 and latest ME firmware (16.1.25.2020) have been installed before running any tests.

I can see there is already a beta BIOS: ROG-MAXIMUS-Z790-EXTREME-ASUS-0804 - is it safe to install this one?Â*

It's a silicon lottery and you lost. Return it for an Apex if you want better ram OC.


I did notice that the Gskill 7600Mhz kit QVL did at one time list all 3 Z790 Maximus boards Extreme Apex Hero and the ROG Strix E and Strix F, 5 ROG boards in total and now only the Z790 Apex remains.

Never have I seen motherboards pulled from a QVL list before - weird. :rolleyes:

Also, is the general issue the 4-dimm ROG boards unstable or not reaching even XMP with 2dimms populated or all 4dimms populated or both?

Just checked the QVL and those kits are still list for my MZ790E. 7800 as well. I’m currently running the 7600 kit with SAV decreased to 1.15V and seems stable here. **
