Newegg listing November 4th, today:

Did Newegg sell out their known incoming quantity of boards as Pre-Orders in 48hours? OR did they simply change the purchasing status?

Who knows right?

Did anyone grab a pre-order?

GF: no, no, no

Alright I give up I give in, I'll go ahead and grab a gen 5 1TB SSD on day one of launch but only from WD_Black or SK Hynix Platinum.

I can't stand it anymore, the waiting is making me crazy! Dammit Janet!

Inland? Now I've seen that same gen 5 SSD with 4different company names attached to it. 5year warranty not good if the company packs up their tents and is gone in 5months. lol

You like taking risks bro, so more power to ya. Hope it goes well and you get 10,000MB/s Reads and 9,500MB/s Writes, that's a hyperspeed part. Please let us know what the thermals are like passive and active, idle and load.

For the new gen 5 1TB SSD, I'm only going with either WD_Black or SK Hynix Platinum with a solid 5year warranty. I guess I'm a boring prude. lol

That's why I grabbed the SN850X 7300MB/s gen 4 drive, so I could just sit back relax and watch the gen 5 SSD launch in complete and absolute comfort. Also had to sell the Optane 280GB gen 3 SSD to my engineer friend for $300 before he lost interest...the real truth shines through. lol

Yes, you've been after one for a while. I think you should get it, otherwise you'll be awake at night wondering how good they are lol. Let us know!

I've got it all wrong. I decided to try early retirement last April, but now I'm back to part time work to have some money coming in and pay for the crazy rises in cost of living over here in the UK, but I'm doing more work than when I was full time. How is that supposed to work? Oh well, I should be grateful. Perhaps I should ask them to pay me for more days. They probably will if I ask, although I don't like working. Never have 🙂

I decided not to retire John, not in the classic way. I'm just going to keep doing my work from home office when I get older, I'll slow down a bit but keep on doing my thing until 95. lol 😛 What happens at 95? I'm traveling to the red planet to be cryogenically frozen as a popsicle on my birthday of course, what else would I do? I want balloons. 😛

------

I'm excited to see what type of thermals gen 5 M.2s are going to bring and if the Apex single M.2 mount gen 5 "passive" riser card (that came in the box) will dissipate that heat nice and smooth into the ambient air mounted on my open test bench, it's a scientific thermodynamics kinda thing, wick that heat directly off the tips of those heatsink fins, lol. 🙂

That Z790 Apex passive riser card is so large for a single tiny M.2 ssd, ya just gotta wonder - maybe ROG was preparing for worst case thermal scenarios.

Anyhoo, I like guessing prices of future tech and I'm betting on gen 5 M.2 drives from Samsung and WD_Black and SK Hynix, Sabrent, Seagate, the major players to be $299 for 1TB at launch. Taking into consideration the extreme demand that will be present the first few weeks of availability. Of course, the prices will drop later as they always do. 🙂

I'd be interested in the thermals of one of those drives as well. I guess it would get pretty hot, or at least I guess it would if not for that built in fan. Even my little external 1Tb 970 Evo Plus (Gen 3) that I use for extra backups gets quite hot after a few minutes of transferring files, and that's in a decent little aluminium case with a thermal pad. I think it only goes to 3,500Mb/s (roughly). So yours might be 3x the speed. I think that it has the potential to get HOT lol. Might be amazing as an OS drive, you might even beat the 5s boot time barrier... now that really would be amazing 🙂

Time for bed here, so here is today's entertainment.

They are playing one of Elton John's old pianos in St Pancras train station, London. Such talent and yet people just walk by and ignore it. I find that incredible. I'd watch that all day!

I could watch that woman pianist all day. (tongue waggle waggle) 😛

Here's a train station performance I've posted twice, it's ideal for New Year's Eve and looking forward to a brand new year. A Disney film song fused with opera vocals - what could possibly be better?

Braegnok is thinking anything AC/DC would be better. lol

From the reviews, it seems the gen 5 NVMe SSDs run hot,.. I agree waiting to see temps, both with factory cooling solution, and active cooling.

I plan on modifying the Z790 Apex 5.0 M.2 card,.. hopefully the Alphacool Core M.2 NVMe 4.0 PCIe block will match-up, mount to Apex 5.0 card, or can be modified to mount.

I ordered the Alphacool block yesterday,.. so will soon find out what is required drilling, tapping,... but it might just fit,.. lol
