When I have 5 hard drives plugged in, no problems. A2 post code goes through quick but when I plug cd DVD ROM into any of the SATA ports, detection A2 takes several seconds.
It seems to be effected by the cd ROM only regardless of the port because I tried to plug a 5th SSD into the same port and detection went quick. (Old optical drive)
Is there anything that can be done in the bios to help with that ?
Cd ROM works as expected,.just takes forever to detect for some reasons.
Just having the cd ROM connected along with 3 other SSD drives (total of 4) no problems but as soon as you plug 5th one, all hell breaks loose.
This sounds like a bug to me.

I don't know of a fix, but you could try a USB connected CD-DVD drive - I do that and have no problems. I haven't checked, but I don't think they cost much.

Hi @tonycstech what is the exact name of your Z690 board? Also which SATA Port number are you using to connect your optical drive? Lastly, if you use a timer on your phone, what is time difference in seconds that you notice which gets taken by your setup when an optical drive is connected compared to when the drive is not connected. Just so we have a sense of your statement that it takes several seconds. Lastly, do you have FAST BOOT enabled or disabled in the BIOS under Boot Configuration?

Hero Maximus.
Port does not matter, problem persists no matter what port i plug it into.
Detection time takes about 10-15 seconds VS 1 second by watching the post code indicator.
No fast boot. NEVER.
Tried oldest BIOS and newest. same result.
The drive may be 10+ years old but so are some of the SSD's so i am not sure if that matters.
Samsung firmwares are up to date so........
I can try every single port there is (ive tried maybe 3) and confirm it will happen no matter what port i plug it into, but i feel like its a waste of time.

Hi @tonycstech thank you for sharing this additional information. When I looked at your user manual at https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1700/ROG_MAXIMUS_Z690_HERO/E20159_ROG_MAXIMUS_Z690_HERO_UM_... on page VIII the following information is shown.
The very last FOOTNOTE with 5 astericks is what is catching my attention. It seems SATA Port 1 are special. This is why I was asking exactly which ports are you using.
Do you want your optical drive to support boot behavior then you NOT be should be connecting this drive to port 1 or 2. If booting from drive is not important then you can connect to any of the ports.
Since during POST BIOS is typically looking for available BOOTABLE devices besides detecting the connected hardware, I would try connection this drive to PORT 1 and see what changes in terms of the boot behavior.
You have also not mentioned if this extra boot time is taken when you do a cold start (like shutdown, wait for a minute and then start your PC) or warm start (like restart in Windows). I expect warm starts to be faster than cold starts.
Looking forward to your response with additional details once you get a chance to digest this information and run some additional tests.
