Z690 Extreme Glacial bios update?

Hi all, I'm one of the people who still runs the bios version 1505, and I have been reading for quite some time now on bios updates.. now since 2703 has been out since a while... should I actually update?

Also I'm running 64gb mixed kingston beast kit @ 4000 mhz (yes it won't go higher because mix kit, actually planning to get a proper 64 kit soon from G.Skill, since waiting for a 128gb kit takes too long unfortunately) now this ram is quite newer as well, so do I have to upgrade bios for this before or isn't it needed?

Hello News4meh,

If you're not having any issues, it's not necessary to update the bios.

However, ASUS does recommend updating to bios 2703 to mitigate potential security vulnerabilities, it also improves system stability.

I wouldn't recommend it. I had some crazy issue after a BIOS update a year ago, which resulted in me having to replace my motherboard entirely, some more info here: Z690 formula bios 2703 - Republic of Gamers Forum - 960305 (asus.com)

If things are working as expected, don't mess with it. A BIOS update is not going to make your computer run any different, but it sure as heck can break things.

I can't say for sure what happened, but bios 2703 is working ok for me.

Thanks. I mean, sure, it's not affecting everyone. Not even most, or people would be talking about it. So many things have to line up just right for something to go so wrong with custom-built PCs, right:) For me, the issue went away when I only had 2 M.2 drives installed. But totally unusable with 3 or 4. The only difference at that time (when the issues started) was the BIOS update. Then, a replacement motherboard with older BIOS, with all the same hardware, and 4 M.2 drives, still works, about 9-10 months later. I never figured out for sure what was causing these issues for me, but I found a solution, just keeping an older BIOS firmware. And to be clear, it's completely possible that it was that specific board that I was issues with, it might have been defective in some way, and maybe this replacement one I have now will be totally fine if updated, but I'm not willing to test this theory.

Runs smooth as it can be, I was quite nervous doing this update after reading all the horror stories, but everything working as intended, boot time is so much better as well! 14s instead of 30-40
