I have a Z790-E which has a usb 3.2 Gen 2 type-c port on the back. it is supposed
to be very fast. i have tested it and it has speed right in line with a usb2 port. the
front panel usb3 connectors are 10 time faster. i have the latest bios and all the
latest drivers. is this a hardware problem which needs an RMA or a driver issue?
Thanks.

Can you see UCMCLIENT listed in Device Manager?

If not, see this thread: https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?131960-Help-with-Device-Driver-missing-Occur-after-Z790-08...
Z690 Hero, 12900K, BIOS 4001, MEI 2433.6.3.0, ME Firmware 16.1.32.2473, 7000X Case, RM1000x PSU, ASUS TUF OC 3090TI, 2 x 16GB Corsair RAM @ 5200MHz, Windows 11 Pro 23H2, Corsair H150i Elite AIO, 4x Corsair RGB fans, 3x M.2 NVME drives, 2x SATA SSDs, 2x SATA HDs.

Never mind. I had a bad cable. bought another one and all is good. Also,
why isn't the text showing when i (try to) look at a post. Can see it if i
view source. using Edge. thanks. Also, i am not seeing UCMClient in
Device Manager. where is it located? i Asussetup in the ucm folder.

Go to MoKiChu's drivers threads and grab the latest Thunderbolt drivers. They contain the UCM drivers, Asus drivers do not. It's explained in the thread link I suggested above...

Just update all relevant driver provided by MoKiChu. Also USB data transmissions also required receiving end hardware capable. Some controller on the receiving end may also cause the issue too.
