Would the ROG MAXIMUS Z790 DARK Hero benefit from one of the contact frames (thinking Thermal Grizzly), or is the board + backplate considered strong enough on its own not to bend?

Bit of a loaded question. Some users seem to struggle to get the correct torque settings, or perhaps there are some tolerance issues. These things can lead to memory instability amongst other things. You can test first, it's your system - just be mindful of the potential drawbacks. I can't say I noticed any perceivable difference in temperatures on my 14900KF.

Hi @lawrencewilliam my advice would be to test without before installing, the difference on this gen can be negligible. Look for a Performance Core delta of higher than 10c.

Would I be any worse off if I installed first?
The build hasn't happened as yet, and being disabled I would prefer to do something the once. Getting into the case once built would be a lot harder for me than installing beforehand.
Not asking for a definitive answer, more general advice. I doubt that I would do more than try the one-click XTU. at least for now.
Thanks

Thanks, all I can do I guess.
Would have liked a definitive answer, but then wouldn't we all re everything, lol.

Yeah. Unfortunately, not every IHS will be identical and neither will the board or retention/amount of flex. It's why there's mixed results out there. Just one of those extra considerations in the DIY space. If the concavity of the IHS is bad enough, you'll likely find some benefit. That's as much as one can say. 👍

Maybe I'll win the lottery tonight and then be able to learn the expensive way 😂
