MZ790E Q code 55 solved

Had to RMA the former MZ790E due to code 55 with GSkill 6400 memory all at default. Received the new MZ790E today. No problem. Boots without issue into the bios at default with the same memory kit. Testing memory at default currently.

Noticed that there’s a note to update to FW ….2020 BEFORE flashing bios 0703 on the Asus website:

“Before BIOS update, please download Intel ME update tool from ASUS support site, and update ME firmware to Version 16.1.25.2020 to ensure optimized system settings.”

I have not installed windows yet. Is there any mechanism to updating the FW outside windows?*

Glad you got it resolved, Hopper. I didn't think there was much point pursuing with the board you had in hand. Glad that turned out to be the case!

So there is something wrong with the memory tracers or the slots themselves, clearly it is a quality issue with the Asus boards.
It is not normal to try 2-3 mobos (and most of the times not even then) just for the XMP to work as it should.
Either the Asus Quality dept is not doing the job properly or they just leave it like this, throwing the cat to the customer...
I was really hoping Z790 would be different though.

Had a hard time installing windows as there was no driver for the intel net adapter. Used microsoft's update assistant to download a copy of W11 22h2 but couldn't get a viable internet connection that way. Had to go around things a bit to get everything installed.

Maybe you overtightened the CPU cooler? Might want to back off on the cooler screws a bit and recheck it. Maybe a bent socket pin? Might inspect the socket for bent pins. The fact that you have the same error code with 2 different motherboards suggests it may be the memory or CPU. Do you have another CPU or memory kit to test?

Greetings, Hopper. Thanks for your reply.

I have the minimum configuration assembled on a table for testing (board, 1x RAM, CPU and power supply) . CPU cooler scrwes were slightly tightened with my fingers at the test. I also started the system just holding the cooler with my hands to test if CPU heats up. It did warm up, so at least the CPU doesn't seem to be completely dead.

I checked socket pins at the new Z790 before placing the CPU. I dissasembled the CPU again to check the pins again. They looked good as well as the CPU (I will try to attach photos to this post).

Unfortunately, I only have these components and can not dive anything. My friends and colleagues have also not yet switched to DDR5.
My "old" computer has a ROG Maximus VIII Hero with 1151 socket and DDR4 RAM.

When the system stuck at code 55 no alarm sound through the speaker.
When no RAM is insertet I get code 53 and the speaker makes an alarm signal.

You have a DIMM in memory slot B2 not A2. It may not boot like that. Try the DIMM in memory slot A2. Memory configuration in the manual.
