So I had updated the ME FW to …2124 before updating to bios 0904 as recommended but now FW …2020 is posted again on 4/18 with the latest 4/17. Is anyone monitoring this? So confusing.

Yea, You probably can boot with the old M2 drive on the new machine to update the ME FW, but you probably need to wipe the drive at that point and reinstall windows. I would think there would be some compatibility issues otherwise. It has been my practice to do that if I am understanding you correctly. I am about to do the same thing with a second PC, but I suspect I might need a fresh windows install to make sure everything is working correctly. Then you can install the MEI drivers and chipset drivers too. I usually install the chipset driver then MEI driver. You can update the bios anytime after updating to the recommended ME FW. I usually get the bios settings done then reinstall windows, chipset, MEI driver etc.

I had no issue with the 2020 FW with 0816 bios. I updated to 2124 FW with 0904 as recommended. Works well here.

I would think if you already have heat sinks installed you don’t need anything more. I guess it depends on what slot you are going to the M2 in. You might post pictures for everyone to review.

Thanks, Hooper,

I'm going to reserve the PCIE 5.0 M2 Slot for future use since all of my Hardware,  M2. drives, GPU are still PCIe 4.0 . why split the frequency on 2 devices that  aren't even PCIE 5.0 , lol.  the 2 Samsung M2 drives, the 980 and the 960 I have will go into M2.2 & M2-3 respectively.  But since both come with heatsinks on them I was wondering about applying the thermal pad on top another heatsink.  wouldn't that make them hotter under there?

Wouldn’t think it’s necessary. There are thermal pads integrated with the board which should be sufficient. I wouldn’t use anything in addition to that and it may be even work anyway due to space constraints.

Lane allocation might be an issue too. Your video card may drop to x8. Keep that in mind too.

so installing the thermal pad on top of this is okay?

I would think so. I installed my M.2 on the thermal pad which came with the DIMM.2 module in the kit.

hey Hopper, one more question.  The base bios out of the box supports the 13900KS ,  right? and do you see any weirdness in bios 0904?

0904 running fine here. No problems. I think I’m using FW …2124 with it.

anybody on here with a RTX 3090 FE in that PCIe 5.0 X 16 slot with no issues? I worry about my GPU fitting with that OLED so close to the slot.

Shouldn’t be a problem. I haven’t seen anyone say anything about that. I’m using a riser cable with mine but I don’t think you should have an issue there. I’m running a 4090.

Hopper,

Can you do me a favor and post the contents of the software USB that came with the motherboard for me on google drive or other that I can download and burn to a USB.  Somehow I didn't get one with my board and the wrong manual for the motherboard.  I've contacted ASUS to get a replacement 10 times already and they claim on the last that they don't have any.  Needless to say I was a bit unhappy about it.  Anyways,. I'd appreciate it if you can help me out.  Thanks.  A Hero Manual does me no good,  But I got the PDF of it off the ASUS site or the Maximus Z790 Extreme already. So I'm good there.
