Maximus Z790 dark hero HDD indicator connection

Is there a connection for the H/SDD indicator?

I hope there is one, I find it very usefull to determine if the system is locked or just bogged down with storage reads/writes.

There is the tiny LED on the board itself, but I don't want to bend down to look at it, you pretty much have to lay down as the video card blocks most of the view.

Maybe "Sysytem Panel Header"?

I don't think there is any physical connection, but I have seen system tray apps that will show HDD activity. Like this one: https://sourceforge.net/projects/activityindicat/

Haven't tried it myself, but maybe that will do the job?

Actually I just tried it, scans as virus free and works well. You can even select which drive you want and set it to auto-start if you want. Simple program, but very good.

Z690 Hero, 12900K, BIOS 3701, MEI 2407.6.1.0, ME Firmware 16.1.32.2473, 7000X Case, RM1000x PSU, ASUS TUF OC 3090TI, 2 x 16GB Corsair RAM @ 5200MHz, Windows 11 Pro 23H2, Corsair H150i Elite AIO, 4x Corsair RGB fans, 3x M.2 NVME drives, 2x SATA SSDs, 2x SATA HDs.

Interseting idea, but it won't quite work. I like to use it mostly during boot up, then if it is taking a while and I can see if there is any hdd activity, that usualy tells me it is just taking longer to load, or it crashed. Oh well,

Seriously, I must have went over the manual several times and for some reason did not see this. I should have known it would be part of the FP header. I think the onboard hdd LED was throwing me off or something.

Thanks!

A more accurate picture:

I'd completely forgotten about the front panel header because my current case doesn't have a drive activity LED fitted 🙄

Unfortunately, my case also does not have an HDD LED - I had to install it myself.

My case (ASUS ProArt PA-602) also does not have this LED. I believe with the move to CPU connected NVMe drives this indicator is getting obsolete. My understanding is that this indicator is for chipset connected storage drives. So anyone just using CPU connected NVMe drives only, this indicator will not tell anything. This is my best guess and it needs to be tested by someone who has an activity indicator.

I have an NVMe drive (M.2_3 socket) and a SATA SSD connected to the motherboard (Maximus Z790 Hero). An LED indicates the operation of each.
The M.2_3 socket is connected to the chipset.
