I currently have a Z790-E II motherboard (spec info on the ASUS main products page). I have a Gen 4 SSD in the main top slot which is a shared lane with my gfx card (card is capable of Gen 5). I have therefore had to downrate my gfx card to Gen 4 because it's sharing with the Gen 4 SSD.
Anyway, I don't know but if I get a Gen 5 SSD and put that in the top main shared slot - will I be able to run this SSD & the gfx card at Gen 5/PCIe 5.0 on this motherboard? My understanding is that the top shared slot's capable speed ie. Gen 5, is independent of the other SSD slots (which to my understanding are Gen 4 only). Am I correct?
If so, I will install a proposed Gen 5 SSD in the top slot and run it at Gen 5 speed along with the gfx card, by making the appropriate setting adjustment in the BIOS.
Btw, I also have 3 other SSD's in the other 'what I believe are' Gen 4 only capable slots below on the motherboard.
Thanks in advance.

For anyone else encountering this issue please read this useful info:
Also, Gen 4 gfx card -> PCIe 4.0 x16 = 31.5Gb/s
What this has made me realize is that I should upgrade on this board to a Gen5 (PCIe 5.0) gfx card and place that solely in the safeslot - but not to place any SSD whatsoever into the shared lane M2 slot - but instead place all 4 of my SSD's into the Gen4 slots underneath (which will not have any effect on the gfx card's performance).

Whatever you received as an AI response is all correct. It is all in your board's manual as well.
I have Z790 Dark Hero board with RTX 4090 nVidia card. I have installed a GEN 5 M.2 drive in this shared M.2_1 slot. Yes, your GFX card will get less lanes (like 8 lanes at PCIe 5.0 speed) that still plenty of lanes for your GFX card. This way you can have an ultra fast drive while having almost to full potential of your GFX card. You don't have to build your system without PCIe 5.0 drive by not using the shared M.2_1 slot. Just make sure you install a PCIe Gen 5 drive in this shared slot to get the very best configuration from your setup.
I hope this helps someone.
