I was looking for advice from you good people on the internet.
I have recently purchased a
ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero
ROG Strix 4080 Super OC
Samsung 990 Pro M.2 4TB
I have a pre existing Samsung 970 Evo 1TB as a boot drive in my current system.
I was wondering which configuration I should use for my M.2's on my new motherboard.
M.2_1 is the PCI -5 which I will not be using.
M.2_2 is directly from the CPU but is right under where my GFX will be. Will it be ok to mount the 990 in that position?
M.2_3 I will mount my old 970 Evo. Is it worth cloning my system onto the 990 from the 970? (7,450/6,900 MB/s v 3,500/2,500 MB/s theoretical). I might just end up reinstalling anyways but if I choose not too.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar setup, with a 980 Pro and a 980 SSD and a 3080 GPU. I found M2.1 and M2.2 would cause the SSD to run very hot as they are masked by the GPU, so I am using M2.3 and M2.4. I would put the 990 in M2.3 and 970 in M2.4 and clone tie OS from the 970 to the 990. Use Samsung Migration it works very well.
Hope that helps

Sorry it took so long to reply Life took over.
Many thanks for the info. I might change my setup at som epoint. I had already installed it all before you replied.
So basically, I put the 990 pro in socket 2 and the 970 evo in socket 3 . both running about 55 under crystal disk mark and it has been relatively warm in the UK where I am 32-33°C so I don't think that is bad.
I never bothered reinstalling but I did move my entire steam directory from the EVO to the PRO just to clear some space.
Anyways thanks again and Kudo's left for you 🙂

Glad to be of help. I have upgraded my case to a Corsair 7000 RGB and my cooler to a Corsair to a H170i. The M2 SSDs' temps are now around 40 degrees, that with Samsung Magician.
