but there might be a gen5 m.2 in my future... (only gen4's now.)
Looks like it would go as fast in either slot... Gigabyte GeForce RTX™ 3060 Ti VISION OC 8G (rev. 2.0)
tnx
EDIT - I keep changing mobos - for the Maximus, the rule would be the same: Use G5-1 for vid card and use M.2_2,3,4,5 for sticks. Easy!

Hello kris33
You'll want to use the G5 slot which is the first pcie x16 slot.
The other two pcie x16 slots run at x4. Nvidia gpu's need at least x8 pcie lanes to function.
From the Tech Specs:
When M.2_1 is occupied with SSD device, PCIEX16(G5) will run at x8 only.

Probably better to go with a pcie 4.0 ssd as all the other M.2 slots are pcie 4.0.

Cool, so use G5 and don't use m.2_1 . Easy. Thanks!

Yes, I think staying away from M.2_1 slot would be good. No problem!
My on order mobo changed again to a Maximus wifi7. - hopefully this stays locked in!!!
