Z790-E Gaming WiFi II hasn't had any kind of updates for anything for at least 4 months. This is inconsistent with it's previous history of updates.
Has this motherboard reached EOL?

Yes, pretty much. There is z890 platform now, which takes Asus focus. There should be at least one more BIOS and Intel ME firmware update for z790, but there is no news when it will happen. MSI released BIOS update in mid March, Asus started their Beta BIOS around same time, but there's no word later. No official version yet, I'm also upset by this.

It's normal for stuff like this to happen when newer products are out. Also, z890 took a lot of microcode updates and bios updates to fix bugs/performance. While we wont get updates for months at a time even 12th gen still gets support.

I only built my current PC a year ago but looks like I will have to now get a z890 as I think it's important to be able to update everything in order to keep things running smoothly.
I can use the same airflow case (unless I fancy a switch to a fishtank); and I can salvage basically all the insides from this build. I have read that the LGA 1700 AIO will fit over the top of the LGA 1851 CPU as it's the same fittings on the motherboard - so that's ok.
I should have to shell out about £340 for the 265K CPU and about £400 for the Strix z890-E (at current prices).

Even if you have money to throw away, I wouldn't recommend going for z890, especially if you're switching from z790.
Z890 isn't a great platform that's why so many patches.
Z790 is stable now, and in a year or two there will be new platform on new CPU socket 19xx so better withhold or consider AMD.
Arrow Lake CPUs are a fiasco, their gaming performance was slower than Raptor Lake. Now it's maybe on par, but updating will bring you not many benefits if any at all.
Also, z790 is pretty stable and doesn't need more compatibility patches, maybe some security UEFI updates of more fixes for VminShift.
It's your money so do what you want with it, but at lest do some research.

Thank you for the great advice @Wesley1, I am glad to be able to listen to your expertise on this matter. Tbh at present I have other priorities monetary-wise and will not need to upgrade imminently, but I have had nothing but problems recently from the z790. I keep getting system freezes - but I did take some other advice on this forum recently and make some changes according to error reports in the event viewer.
For the past week I haven't had a repeat, but I might be speaking to soon.
It didn't look like there was much difference as you say from the z890-E and what I have now - the z790-E II.
I will therefore take your advice and skip the LGA 1851 and wait for the 19xx - where I would prefer to stick to Intel. I can wait a year or so, and that might give me time to save up for everything - assuming as well that a different spec'd AIO might also be required by then.
