GPU stuck in X8 no NVME drive, no PCIE devices plugged in

Z690 Maximus
i9 12900KS CPU
GPU stuck in X8 instead of X16. You can see it in the BIOS screen.
No NVME drivers.
No PCIE devices plugged in.
Used latest GPUZ to confirm the issue.

Tested PCIE lanes to the CPU with a tester, PASS
Tested GPU for PCIE lanes with a tester, PASS
Tried another GPU,  same result.
Update to latest firmware, same result.

Anymore ideas ?
Bios tweak maybe ?

you've flashed the older bios or a recent one?

same 3802 i think.
Asus is not allowing older bios files anymore because they "brick" or actually fix the device.
As you've seen, they are more interested in you shipping it to Asus for repair (we all know how their repair department works thanks to people like GamersNExus and my self) so.....There ya have it.

well i just tried the biosflashback method and sadly it doesn't work for me

I am back in the same spot.
With all drives disconnected and a flashback complete, Bios showed me X16 and i assumed that was the solution.
But once i put the GPU back in, i guess i didnt check ?
Ill have to verify  again.

Ok so i spent great amount of time trying to figure out what the issue is and i found it.
The issue is that engineers at Asus smoke wrong kind of vape.
I had this plugged into the PCIE X16_2. Even without actual riser or USB cable.
So you would think that just the adapter wont do anything and thats exactly what i thought but it DOES.
I do have another adapter similar to this that simply changes the angle to do vertical mount for a capture card and i had capture card unplugged from the riser but GPU remained at X8

tonycstech_0-1725003527016.png

That was until i removed the angle ribon adapter from the PCIE slot GPU turned into X16.
So what in the world ?
If CPU has 24 lanes, why does X1 PCIE adapter takes away 8 lanes ?
Also why does 2nd PCIE X16_2 runs GPU at X8 and not at X16 as it claims to be ?

Look, i understand that i made a fool of my self thinking that an angle adapter is simply extension of the wires and having it plugged in would not effect the circuit in any way, but to my SHOCKING surprize it did.
Either way, this is some "we were high" design choices. There has got to be a way to fix this BS.
Just look how many people are having issues with that its insane.

Not only that, but during my testing i also found that this board does not like to have 5 SATA devices if 5th one is DVD ROM.
You can have 6 SSDs or 5SSD no problem. You can have 3SSDs and 1 DVD ROM but as soon as you bring one more SATA device, post gets stuck in A2 trying to detect things.
This is balls.
Why does it detect each SATA device by its self just fine but only when number exceeds 5 and only when CD ROM is present it does this BS.

If you had told us you were using a riser, it's the first the we would have told you to remove from the equation.

So always be very thorough and give as much info as you can, and pictures of the system you are building .

But my friend, I feel for you. If you wish to DM me we can for from there.

Don't mind passing along some knowledge, I've been at this for over 25 years, and I didn't get there on my own, needed help along the way, and still to today.

No please be very very specific here.
I did not use the riser, i just had it plugged in without anything being plugged into it on the other end.
So theoretically, none of the connections would have been effected at all since the other end of the riser is open line..
I took that idea and i plugged in just the adapter with nothing plugged into it thinking that it would be open line before and after the adapter.
For some weird reasons it wasnt.
My guess they do a hotplug detection regardless of data lines used or not used and simply take 8 lanes away.

This is insanity. CPU has all those lanes just hanging and not used.
There has to be a solution to this. This is a joke considering the cost of these boards is astronomical to some.

Also i am sick and tired of this forum capcha bug

Hi @tonycstech,

I think it's fairly transparent, as per the manual. The motherboard firmware doesn’t distinguish between active devices and passive adapters when reallocating lanes; it will simply detect that the slot is in use. This will very likely be the same regardless of SKU vendor.

No one reads the manual before purchasing the product.
Its a general public assumption that you can populate every slot and have top slot be X16 at all times unless there are some OBVIOUS limiting factors such as NVME drivers etc which is not the case here.

The fact that is problem should not exist is proven by endless posts of people trying to solve the  none existent problem "as asus would put it" allover the forums.

As i read your screenshot of the manual, i cant even wrap my head around how to interpret that.
The word "supports" should be removed and replaced with "will limit" because otherwise it seems like it supports both X16 and X8 so yeah, i should be able to get Х16 in both slots or i can also have X8 in both slots. How ever i like to set it in the BIOS is what it will do.
Thats how i would interpret that.

My friend tonyc, you are your own worst nightmare...

I've read 100's of  MB Manuals, some my own, some not.

You are never wasting your time reading a relevant one.

Go back to basics man, take CompTia A+ or something.
