DDR5 Memory won't go past 4000mhz to reach 4800mhz on Z690-F

Just put together a Z690-F (Bios 0702), 12900k and 4 x 8gb Crucial ( CT2K8G48C40U5 ).

Memory isn't listed on the QVL, just to get that out of the way.

It all works, but if I set the MB to XMP I to enable 4800mhz, the motherboard will not post. When it does eventually boot, the memory drops to 4000mhz and not the 4800mhz on the XMP I.

Anyone else getting similar issues ?

Well I'm using the ROG Strix Z690-E Gaming Wifi mobo and I have all 4 DIMM slots populated. If I use XMP1 or XMP2, half the time it won't post, the other half of the time it posts then BSODs. The RAM i'm using is Kingston FURY Beast 5200Mhz (PC5-41600) and i'm using identical 4x16GB DIMMS

CPU-Z tells me the JEDEC value for the RAM is 4800Mhz but the Z690-E clocks it down to 4000Mhz by default (when left on auto). I can clock it up to 4400Mhz manually and the system runs fine without any issues. But if i try to run the RAM at 4800Mhz JEDEC value, I get BSOD's after a few minutes. If i try to run it at 5200Mhz sometimes the board won't post at all, sometimes it posts then immediately BSOD's.

I know they're single sticks but they're identicle. They should at least work at 4800MHz JEDEC value.

Oof. That doesn't sound good. I moved away from an x570 system in order to get away from memory issues when running all 4 dimms. I've only been able to to get 2x16gb sticks so far and I need to get 2 more. It seems like I'm going to run into the same issues as the amd platform 😞

I got a Rog Strix Z690-F that Asus Japan is bundling with 2x16 GB Samsung DDR5-4800. These Samsung DDR5 modules (M323R2GA3BB0-CQKODRAM) are listed as validated by Asus for their Z690 boards.

My experience so far:

(1) With these, by Asus validated and sold DDR5 memory modules (manufactured by Samsung) my Strix Z690- F will not boot with the modules in any of the A sockets. The recommended A2/B2 combination isn't working. I claimed the RAM as faulty, the vendor kindly changed the RAM. However, the new sticks as well do not work in sockets A1/A2. The latest, unofficial, Bios "08" does not change anything in this regard.

(2) After countless hours of trying, increasing memory voltages etc, I found out that the board is only working with the modules in the B1/B2 sockets.

(3) CPU-Z reads the JEDEC value for the RAM correctly as 4800MHz but the Z690-F clocks it down to 4000MHz by default (when left on auto). I need to manually change the frequency.

(4) Running the RAM in the B sockets, I finally got these 4800 rated modules running even up to 5400 MHz with relaxed timings. No booting though from any of the A sockets. The RAM clearly is ok.


My conclusion:

It seems the many reported memory issues here, are related to an "unfinished" BIOS = work in progress. I hope it is not to a board design related issue.

In my case, unfortunately the manual recommended combination A2/B2 does NOT work, with the Samsung DDR5 RAM that Asus is bundling with the Z690-F (in my market). 😞

Interesting I have the same Corsair 5600 c36 ram on an Apex board (only 2 RAM slots) - both XMP 1 and II both randomly BSOD on anything other than 4800mhz or below. Suspect it is BIOS related but still frustrating and not fixed by latest BIOS.

I ran into this issue and thanks to this thread, moved my Corsair 5600MHz RAM to slots A2B2 and XMP II held and is performing as sold in my z690 Hero Mobo. Corsair have suggested that this may have something to do with power to slots but I guess only ASUS can ultimately comment on why A1B1 could post on anything other than AUTO?

If you need 64GB system memory, I recommend going with 2x32GB vs 4x16GB.

My advice would be the Dell kit, and run in enhanced mode @ 4800MHz CL32, CR1, 1.10V and you will be fine.

You need a CPU with a vary strong IMC to run 2x32GB @ 6000MHz 1.43V,.. and performance is not much better than 4800MHz CL32, CR1, 1.10V.

If that is your system you are far ahead of me. I can't spend that kind of money anymore. Wife would kill me. I have a 12700K with a Samsung 980 pro and no discrete graphics yet. I'm looking for a 3080 but I'm just not paying those prices so until they come down to more reasonable prices I'll do without. I'm not gaming so the need isn't there.

Any reason why I shouldn't go with 4x16s? I can't drop over a grand on memory. These 2 kits cost me about $600 and honestly, I'm not sure I want to tempt fate and mess around with the MB again. Originally I was only gonna 2 32GB but I just don't feel like returning the memory. Already had to send the bad board back.

Best reason why not to go with 4x16GB DDR5,.. would be currently there is no solid BIOS/Microcode for running 4x16GB DDR5 on your motherboard past 4000MHz.

Perhaps down the road when DDR5 4x16GB kits are more mainstream, testing will be done and new BIOS/Microcode will be released.

Current DDR5 Memory Support: "If the motherboard has two slots total, than the maximum support is DDR5-4800 in any configuration. If the motherboard has four memory slots total, than the maximum support is DDR5-4400 when two slots are filled with any memory.
If all four memory slots are filled, single rank memory will support up to DDR5-4000.
If all four memory slots are filled, dual-rank memory will support up to DDR5-3600."
