BIOS v1720 Compulsory Update Mega Thread

Hi all,

ASUS is aware of the recent 1720 BIOS that was pushed by Windows Update as well as the complaints of voltage regulation.

ASUS provided this update as optional but if you had a different experience please post here in as much detail as possible:
-Whether you clicked check for updates or Windows updated automatically
-Exact name of the update as it appears on your system
-Date you got the update
-Country or region
-Windows version and product level (ie Windows 11 Home)
-Any update related settings you have chosen such as the Windows Insider Program
-Screenshots if you see Windows listing this update as anything other than optional

Thank you

This thread will be updated as more information is available.

*Multiple threads merged here. Apologies if some of the conversation is disjointed.*

Windows bios update download, automatic or optional probably depends on which version of Windows is installed and the region in which one lives.

In my opinion if the 1720 bios will be removed from Windows Update for all countries and Asus's support page the issue is solved.

You need to investigate with attention 🙂

Not fully resolved I'm afraid. The issue of windows pushing a bios update for enthusiast motherboards is ludicrous. Especially on the Z690 platform. There's a lot of folks that have stuck to older bios versions as newer versions don't always play nice with their memory. So windows forcing a bios update will cause only headaches for people and we'll be back to square one. IMHO.

How come all of a sudden the mods show up to support the cavalry.

Now look BOYS, I don't care how many posts you have but calling a user on this board a liar when he or she says the bios was forced on their systems is a very slippery road to take.

I was one of them that got the bios forced on him and I've been here longer than most of you. Don't insult me. I'm about as peeved as I can be right now.

This bios was forced last Wednesday. I even wrote a post on 11 forums regarding ASUS INCOMPETENCE.

I can't believe that you'd get behind a company that only cares about making money. Some mods you are!!

I modded on VIA forums many years ago and I never supported a lie or sucked up to the establishment.

I think on Windows systems driver updates are AUTOMATICALLY installed by DEFAULT, and this might include this dreaded BIOS/ASUS firmware update.

Automatic Driver Updates can be disabled, although how to do so is not obvious in any way: To stop Windows 10 from doing automatic driver updates, navigate to Control Panel > System & Security > System > Advanced System Settings > Hardware > Device Installation Settings. Then choose "No (your device might not work as expected)."

Under Windows 11 it's Windows Settings -> System -> About -> Advanced System Settings -> Hardware -> Device Installation Settings -> No (your device might not work as expected)

I think (but I might be wrong) that users receiving this as an optional update MIGHT have disabled the automatic driver updates on their systems. Either this OR Microsoft has since then moved the Asus Firmware update to Optional Updates - not clear since Microsoft itself has made a mess of this by not calling things by their true name (e.g. since when 'apps and custom icons' = "driver updates"?!).

Here I am running Windows 11 on a Z690 Maximus Extreme motherboard still on BIOS 811 and I have yet to see 1720 appear on the list of optional updates - and if it got forced on my system I would be REALLY REALLY REALLY upset (as if the forced updates on that bloatware that is Armoury Crate were already not bad enough!).

I will update MY own BIOS WHEN and IF I want, ok, Big Brother?

It's not this, either. I've not disabled this since installing W11.

It is, for lack of any other validation, an optional update. This is why MasterC has asked for screenshots.

Do employees or those who work for Asus own the same retail motherboards as users?

no .... they use MSI

Asus employees are usually given a version of a motherboard produced before mass production to end users, such as the 12900k ES that is a little bit different.

Inform yourself before you joke
