BIOS v1720 Compulsory Update Mega Thread

Hi all,

ASUS is aware of the recent 1720 BIOS that was pushed by Windows Update as well as the complaints of voltage regulation.

ASUS provided this update as optional but if you had a different experience please post here in as much detail as possible:
-Whether you clicked check for updates or Windows updated automatically
-Exact name of the update as it appears on your system
-Date you got the update
-Country or region
-Windows version and product level (ie Windows 11 Home)
-Any update related settings you have chosen such as the Windows Insider Program
-Screenshots if you see Windows listing this update as anything other than optional

Thank you

This thread will be updated as more information is available.

Please do not make this a political post. My official response still stands, we did not set the update as compulsory and several users have verified this. For anyone having an issue, I have offered assistance. And yet, there are still no users posting anything to verify a forced update issue. Do not pursue an answer that pleases you in this tone and manner - you will find yourself removed from the forum.

Some of the answers that you are getting are Asus employees. Don't forget this is a Chinese company.

@masterC: Still no response to my questions. Is it that no one at Asus wants to own up to the mistake?
@Asus, being honest doesn't make you look bad, it makes you look human.

You know full well that you have all the information about when the update was forced, when it was disabled and when you decided to have MS offer it as an update

Answering frankly and straightforward questions that are asked is the best way to get back confidence and show your customers that you REALLY DO CARE.

Now if what you say is true that BIOS update was never forced on some of us, does that mean we communicated between each other and organized a revolt to make you look bad?

What a huge waste of time. Man Asrock is looking better and better each day. Ohh yeah, I forgot some say that it's actually ASUS.

The update was never meant to be forced, and so there should not be any concerns about whether we have changed the method in which you will receive updates. As mentioned, if you are being 'forced' to update then there is a problem, let us know and we will provide support (even if that requires contacting Microsoft).

If 1720 is not working out, please roll back to the previous version. The only benefit is CPU support.

As far as I can tell, there are only 3 possible scenarios at this point in time:
1. You are faced with forced updates - let us know and provide info so we can help you resolve it.
2. V1720 is not working out - Roll back to previous version.
3. V1720 is working fine - No actions required.

Anything missed?

OK let's make this clear for all.

1) Why was this update forced install for some like me who had MS drivers disabled
2) Why did Asus permit Microsoft to push the update ?
3) And if Asus did not permit what happened ?
4) Why is Asus asking MS to offer Bios updates on gaming machines
5) Will this bios be revised to check voltage issues submitted by users ?
6) Does Asus intend to start having bios updates with MS on gaming Rigs ?
7) If yes, what's the reason for that step?

Anything missed?

And with all due respect @xeromist half the users (including myself) probably don't know what incongruent means. Incoherent maybe?

I have tested the 1720 bios with my Strix Z690-A D4 and i can no longer undervolt, so the bios is buged.

With Intel XTU you can see why i can no more undervolting, because in the 1720 Bios the "Undervolt Protection" is enabled and within the bios there is no option to disable the Undervolt Protection!

Check this Asus! Please!

Can we get an update on this? It does seem like undervolting isn't working. I went on 1720 and my max volts are higher but also the average values. For example on my 12900KS I was running a -.0250 Offset and was getting on 1601 around 1.4 on the max and around 1.3 under load (stock ) Now it's around 1.325~1.3 ish range with the max getting to around 1.465.

You are right, undervolting isn't working in 1720 because undervolt protection is set in bios to enabled and there is no opportunity to disable undervolt protection in the bios, i am back on 1601. But you can see, Asus don't care about it, the bios is still on the download page.

Also, a lot of modules within the bios are outdated and there are newer versions, Asus also don't care about it.

The problem, i have described here, are also unsolved till bios 1720. The four entrys under Primary Display makes no sense, because all do the same, it shows the bios on all connected Screens, only in Bios 0901 it works correct! But what can i say, i give up about that.

Can you comment asus? On this?

For your info, i am using adaptive offset to undervolting, it has no effect in bios 1720, also Intel XTU says undervolt protection is enabled and i can also not undervolt in Windows with XTU - see picture that i have posted here.

Just throwing my personal experience with this update out there:

I've been running Windows Insider Preview builds for Windows 11. This update appeared when I was using build 25179. It showed up under the mandatory updates like this 94747. It was technically not an optional update as it never appeared in the optional updates section, but there was an install button the first time it popped up, which I did press. After updating, my system would hang on shutdown/restart for 3-4 minutes. The system would sit there powered on, but there wasn't any display output or RGB lights from the motherboard itself. After that 3-4 minute period the system would either POST or shut down. I did not have any of the voltage problems like everyone else, though.

I quickly went back to 1601 to check if the issue was still there, and it wasn't. I restarted a few times to make sure, but was greeted with the bios update screen after POST on like the third restart. There were no warnings from Windows and the system began updating again without any input from me. Often times, there's an option to either restart and update, or just restart without updating if there are updates pending, but that was not the case this time. I was never given the option to not update and there wasn't any indication of a pending update either. That's what really threw me off as this has never happened before.

Anyway after shutting down and power cycling my problem was fixed, so I decided to stay on 1720. The update itself appears under the Driver Updates section of Windows Update after installing it.
94748

I'm using the ROG Strix Z690-F Gaming Wifi motherboard.

Windows 11 21H2 downloaded bios 1720 as an optional update for me, I had to check the box for it to install.

It installed without any problem.

Please don't tell us lies, now it is optional! There are dozens of feedback and testimonials with screenshots that confirm that and I can try it.

I'm happy for you, but other users don't seem to me to be of the same opinion and experience about it.
