BIOS v1720 Compulsory Update Mega Thread

Hi all,

ASUS is aware of the recent 1720 BIOS that was pushed by Windows Update as well as the complaints of voltage regulation.

ASUS provided this update as optional but if you had a different experience please post here in as much detail as possible:
-Whether you clicked check for updates or Windows updated automatically
-Exact name of the update as it appears on your system
-Date you got the update
-Country or region
-Windows version and product level (ie Windows 11 Home)
-Any update related settings you have chosen such as the Windows Insider Program
-Screenshots if you see Windows listing this update as anything other than optional

Thank you

This thread will be updated as more information is available.

Needless to say, it starts automatically for me and it is optional for me! The bios 1720 has and creates big problems, and therefore Asus and Microsoft have to remove it!
Asus from the tech support site and Microsoft from its servers.

Please we must not find solutions to their mistakes

Now shows as an optional update in driver category. Restarted mutliple times and it's never installed automatically for me. Wondering if using Shutup10 and having driver updates blocked is preventing MS installng it and forcing it to remain in optional updates?

Do find it interesting that I can no longer find Bios and Firmware updates via Armoury crate, not currently installed nor whats available. Not that it ever showed correctly half the time but at somepoint its updated and no longer shows them

If asus can't push updates without resetting the cmos, they shouldn't be on windows update.

looking into this a little more what I got thru wu, it was not a full blown bios but rather a system firmware/driver update(?). Looks like it updates the Firmware/System Firmware driver and only that. Driver version 10.1.2.1720. I mean it's tiny compared to full bios size

That's interesting, I hadn't noticed the file size as it isn't displayed on my system. So is that update not the BIOS? I assumed it was from the file name.

Though listed under Bios on asus page, they are UEFI Firmware updates.

the WU update brings you up to the latest 1720 released.

So I will admit that I am now confused. On the ASUS support pages, the BIOS/UEFI update is clearly that - an update to v1720. Whilst it seems that the BIOS update is no longer being forced on people through Windows update, I now want to know what the Windows firmware update does.

I haven't tried it, so has anybody installed the optional Windows driver update (10.1.2.1720) without updating the BIOS? What happens if you do? Does it update the BIOS or not? I'm still assuming from the driver name that it has something to do with the latest BIOS release. After all, it ends with "1720".

I'm so tempted to try the Windows update myself, but as everything is working great (Z690 Hero on BIOS 1601) I don't want to mess anything up. If anybody has already done this, could you tell us what happened please. Thanks.

It was a bios update (still firmware but not the same). Although being small, it was still a bios update. You can use a tool to check your firmware. MoKiChU includes it in update package for firmware update.

Usually I'm almost sure that it's always because I've never seen a firmware version be the same as my bios version.

So, I flashed back from 1701 to 1601and rebooted. It didn't update my bios this time. I've since rebooted at least 10 times since with no issue. Just to be safe, I powered down and was not forced to update when booting.

I think MS beat ASUS on this issue as Asus still is hosting 1720 on the hero support page at least. Asus, I'm a loyal customer. I still want to be but between the catching on fire issues and now this BIOS issue, I'm starting to question that. Prove me wrong and address this quicky.

Is this bios 1720 safe to update? I'm more concerned about the voltage bug.
