bIOS update v0904 to 2801 [HELP]

Hello to everyone,

Processor: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900KF , 3000 Mhz, 24 Core(s) 32 Logical Processor(s)

Bios Version / Date: American Megatrends Inc. 0904 3/29/2023

BasedBoard Product: ROG STRIX Z790-E GAMING WIFI

Well now, lets start the story. I was cleaning my PC from dust, added thermal paste and everything and once I started the PC I had the genius idea to simply update my bios.

Went on the wild wild net and checked if there are any issues related to the new version 2801. I found some that were related to Windows 11, I thought I was safe since I'm using Windows 10. Once I looked further I didn't see any strange issues but there were some improvements.

So what did I do, well I downloaded the 2801 version from the official website -> https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-z790-e-gaming-wifi-model/helpdesk_bios/ .
I double checked and my current version was 0.904.
Moving along as any other good christian boy/man I extracted the files on a formatted USB flash and ran the BIOSRenamer.

After that I restarted my machine , loaded my BIOS and went to use the Asus EZ Flash 3 Utility v03.00. Located the Bios 2801 update file and read it. After the Processing Update loaded the computer turned off. No restarts no nothing. Waited about 15 minutes and nothing.

I stand up and clicked the Clear CMOS button and the computer started, saying BIOS is updating, after few minutes it shut down. Waited again for 5 minutes and once it didn't start I clicked the Clear CMOS again then it said ME is updating. Shut down once again and had to click the 'Clear CMOS' for a third time.

Finally it loaded where I had to go into the bios with F1. Now the fun part, if I change anything in the BIOS and save & exit the PC shuts down and does not want to start using the Power button, had to click the 'Clear CMOS'. If I go in the bios with F1 and simply do not change anything and use "save & exit" it loads the Windows like there aren't any issues.

If I then shutdown the PC it won't start by pressing the power on button, I have to start it using the 'Clear CMOS'. Once again as a normal christian boy/man I downloaded my 0.904 version and installed that one, hoping that it will resolve the issue, but unfortunately my prayers didn't reach anyone. I encountered same issue, I could not save any changes made in the BIOS nor use the power ON/off button.

Currently I'm using the old version 0.904v , can someone assist me in resolving my issue if possible?

two thoughts,

-reseat the processor again. (also double check power cables if you touched them aswell, don't want that beautiful 1.6kw psu to puff up in smoke)

-bios flash back not just a cmon clr

Could you give me more details on how to do a Bios Flash Back? As I do have a bios button on the Motherboard next to the Clear Cmos, but from what I read it is to put a usb flash above it and when pressed and hold it will start an upgrade process from the flash.

it involves a few things.

- usb drive in a particular port described on your motherboard manual

- the bios file renamed to a preset name (usually using a biosrenamer.exe tool), and put in the root folder of the usb drive in the special port

- most motherboards have a flashback button just like the cmos clr button, this tells the bios to find the bios file in the usb drive in the special port and enter into ezflash mode.

apologies for the delayed response.

P.S quote from the asus website from the firmware download section "USB BIOS Flashback tool, please rename the BIOS file (SZ790E.CAP)".

honestly i would try updating the bios in steps. sometimes that can happen .id update in like steps of four.

Additionally 'Vynra' what would be the steps, since when I try the update the first time, it shut down had to click the 'CMOS' button in order the machine to start and it went to BIOS update, then shut down again without automatically starting , which means -> click clear chmos button and then it updated the ME and once again clicked the chmos button to start it...

in all honesty, i wouldn't know if using a download allocated for a different operating system would cause conflicts with the corresponding chipset drivers. definitely give the usb flash back a chance.

Oh, i just reread your post for clarity. you don't rename the file unless you are doing a flashback. renaming it may use a copy of an old firmware stored in the bios. Try flashing with the .CAP firmware without renaming and it will ensure it flashes the actually file you have provided it.

Wait, you mean to simply place the file as it is without using the 'BIOSRenamer' so that it is named 'SZ790E.CAP' or leave it as 'ROG-STRIX-Z790-E-GAMING-WIFI-ASUS-2801.CAP' ?

Leave as is, to quote the website "Before running the USB BIOS Flashback tool,.......rename"

Since you are simply flashing not flashing back or rolling back no rename is suggested, and from experience may cause it to use an old copy stored in the bios.
