asus maximus z790 dark hero >> Computer Freeze

Hello everyone, I bought the Asus Maximus Z790 Dark Hero about 3 weeks ago and currently have two 48 GB DDR5 RAM (6800 MHz) installed.

If I activate the xmp profile in the bios to get the full clock rate, the computer freezes about 20 seconds after it boots up and the computer has to be switched off.

To be honest, I don't understand why a board like this, which is advertised with a maximum speed of 8000 MHz, can't handle it.

I've tried pretty much everything and always have to set the BIOS to the default values so that I can even work with the computer.

This means that I operate the DDR5 RAMs at approx. 4400 MHz.

My current computer configuration is:

asus maximus z790 dark hero
i9 14900k
RTX 4090
DDR5 -6800 48GBx2 CL34-46-46-108 1.35v ( RIPJAWS S5 )
M.2 SSD >> 2 and 4 TB

It would be great if someone has an idea how to fix this.

Hi @Elay1 Can you first confirm that you are using a single memory kit and the memory kit part number?

It seems this kit has yet to be validated by ASUS for 14th Gen according to the QVL, as it is not listed.

Just to be clear, maximum validation (8000MT) has no bearing on what each CPU or memory kit can achieve. There are no 2x48GB 8000MT kits, for instance. The maximum QVL validation for 13th Gen in this capacity is 6800MT - which means it can be tough on the CPU memory controller and memory IC.

You can first try XMP II as this will use the default DIMM timings and relax some of the secondary timings as optimised by ASUS.

Reduce the memory frequency till the system can pass POST/memory training successfully and report back.

Ok, thank you very much for the quick response, the XMP2 profile is the same result, my PC also freezes.

I'll try to slowly increase the clock speed and maybe see if the volt parameters are correct.

Is it possible that ASUS will hopefully fix such problems with a next bio update?

You want to decrease the memory frequency, not increase it. Overclocking holds no assurances as the dependency on the CPU memory controller strength is a large factor.
Set the memory frequency to 6400 and see if stability improves.

Hi i found this on aBenchmark Website: The Core i9-14900K also supports PCI Express 5.0 and up to 192GB of dual-channel DDR5 ECC memory at 5600 MHz.

Does ist mean that the i9 14900k only supports Clockspeed of DDR5 Ram of max. 5600 Mhz ?

The abenchmark is trying to quote "stock" speeds. However, it's even doing that wrong.

5600MT is only applicable in a 1 DIMM per channel configuration on a two slot motherboard topology. If you look up what you'd need to purchase in order to run 192GB density, it should quickly become apparent why it doesn't match Intel's own guidelines.

In your case, you are trying to run 1 DPC on a 2 SPC motherboard. This means the maximum supported frequency is 5200MT. Above this is considered overclocking.
