Maximus XIII Extreme, RAID using M.2_2 and M.2_3?

Anyone know whether it’s possible to RAID (2) non-Intel branded NVMe drives installed in M.2_2 and M.2_3?

Hi,

It is very possible - look at page Xiii of the R13E manual to see what lanes you give up if you want to configure it.

In the BIOS is the option to enable M.2_1 & M.2_2.. Please note M.2_3 is a standalone M2 connection, so it has it's own dedicated lanes, but I'm unsure if you can RAID it with any other M2 connections.

I have drives installed in M.2_1, M.2_2 and M.2_3.

I’m using M.2_1 as my boot drive, and would like to RAID the other two drives. (The drives installed in slots 2 and 3 are matching)

I checked the manual again (page xiii) and I also rechecked the BIOS settings, but I don’t see anything to indicate how I can RAID the drives installed in these (2) slots.

BTW, I already successfully created a RAID using the (2) M.2 drives stored in the DIMM.2 slot.

I can rearrange the M.2 drives and reinstall Windows if needed…

Please let me know if you have any other ideas regarding how I can create a RAID using M.2 slots 1, 2 and/or 3,

Go to the area in the picture. You have to set M2_1 & M2_2 (and lose the corresponding bandwiith from the PCIE slots).

Hmmmm, I already did that…. That’s what allowed me to RAID the (2) DIMM.2 drives together.

Haven’t see any place that will allow me to RAID the M.2_2 and=d M.2_3 drives…

Maybe it’s not possible, or maybe it only works with Intel branded drives???

Hi frameli,

The only way is to raid M2_1 & M2_2 and leave M2_3 as a standalone as far as I could figure out for myself personally.

If all 3 drives are the same type / size, you could:

Move M2_1 to M2_3.

RAID M2_1 & M2_2.

If they are different types / sizes, move 2 identical drives to M2_1 & M2_2 and RAID them, then repurpose the reamining drive into M2_3.

Please be aware DMI on Z590 is limited to PCI3 x 8 bandwidth, so 2 PCIE 4.0 drives aren't going to be any faster than 1 PCIE4.0 drive, assuming you're using an 11 series CPU.

Maybe someone at Asus could confirm..
