Z790-f wifi red led

The PC was working perfectly, and I wanted to change the CPU cooling to an Asus Ryujin III 360 liquid cooler. When I turned it on, it got stuck on the red LED and didn't do anything.

PC Specifications:

  • Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix Z790-F WiFi
  • CPU: Intel i7-14700K
  • RAM: G.Skill F5-6000J3636F-16GX2-TZ5RK
  • Hard Drives: None
  • M.2: Predator GM7000
  • GPU: Asus 3060Ti
  • Power Supply: NZXT 750

Tests I performed:

  • I did a Clear CMOS, no changes.
  • I removed the GPU and M.2 drives, no changes.
  • I tested with only one memory slot, no changes in either case.
  • I switched the memory slots, no changes.
  • The power supply works correctly, tested.
  • I put the previous cooler back on, no changes.
  • I reverted everything to the way it was before, no changes.

Additional Information:
When I press the start button, the RGB on the memory, GPU, and Ryujin screen light up fine, but not the RGB on the motherboard. I'm not sure if that's relevant, but just for information.
When I unplug the ATX connectors (CPU power), the red LED below it lights up correctly.
The motherboard has the latest update from August, but that has never caused any problems before

Why might it not be starting?

Your PC might not be starting due to one of these issues:

1. Cooler Installation: Ensure the cooler isn't too tight and the pump is connected to the correct header.

2. Short Circuit: Check that the cooler's backplate isn't causing a short circuit, and make sure no screws are loose.

3. Motherboard Issues: Try reseating the RAM, re-flashing the BIOS, or testing with a different power supply.

4. Power Supply: Double-check all connections and ensure your PSU is functioning correctly.

5. Debugging: Refer to your motherboard's manual to interpret the red LED indicator.

If all else fails, try testing the motherboard outside the case.

Hi @Minguez I am sorry to hear about your troubles. According to your manual at https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1700/ROG%20STRIX%20Z790-F%20GAMING%20WIFI/E20600_ROG_STRIX_... the RED Q-LED is an indicator for CPU check failing. See PAGE 1-21 of your manual about these Q-LEDs

Are you using the stock Intel Bracket for your CPU or did you also install a Contact Frame for your CPU?

As @AlexWhales mentioned above, the most common cause of this issue is installing the cooler too tight.

At this time, may I suggest that you remove the cooler, take out your CPU and visually inspect that none of the CPU PINS are damaged due to extra pressure. If everything visually looks good then install the cooler again but not tightening it too much.

Hopefully, this will get you back into a working state. Good luck!
