Using the ion-board GPU in addition to ordinary GPU card

I got myself an old monitor (Benq GL2460) that I wanted to use as an overview screen, where Aquasuite loads and shows all the different gadgets (temps, water flow, fill level etc). I have no problem connecting one of my other old monitors (Benq XL2470T), I just connect the HDMI to the on-board GPU and the DP to the graphics card, and switch between them directly on the monitor (this works if it's enabled or not, in the BIOS, so not sure what that setting is for). But if I try it with the old monitor I just bought, it doesn't work. The only difference is that the one I bought doesn't have HDMI, so I use an adapter from DVI to HDMI. Any ideas? The reason, which a ton of you will ask, is that Aquasuite, with my set-up, uses a lot of the GPU (if I run NiceHash and Aquasuite at the same time, NiceHash drops 50%), the same is true for games.

Just to add: The monitor works fine, as long as I connect it to my graphics card and use a DVI-DVI cable.
