Understanding Memory

I am looking for information about memory for an...

ASUS Rampage IV Formula LGA 2011
Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0
ATX Intel Motherboard

Primary use will be gaming and some photo editing (Adobe Apps) and I would like to know more about what memory I should be looking to add. The board specs state that the motherboard supports DDR3 memory that features data transfer rates of 2400(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1600/1333 MHz. Now here comes the question... If I go with the 2400 (oc) memory but don't overclock the CPU will the memory function properly? Meaning will the hertz come down to match the clock speed or will the memory flip out and not function properly? Reason I ask is I don't plan on overclocking right away and would like to know if the higher end memory would work until I decide to OC.

Please be gentle with the replies, as you will hurt my feelings... 😛

if you put XMP profile ( insaide bios ) it will be on the rated setting that the memory comes whit ( lets say 2400 ), or you can set timings manualy.
personaly i would say the range you can use is between 1866 to 2133mhz range ( my personaly recomendation ) since you will not notice enny thing diffrence mutch.
when your gona buy the memory, ALWAYS get 1 kitt ( one kit of 16gig or 32 gig or 64gig ) and dont mix kits even how alike they seems.
get quad channel memory, not corsairs's dominator memory ( from what ive read the mobo dont like that memory ( if i dont remember wrong that is ) ).
for the CPU and memory on OC it all comes down to the controller on the CPU, some can be buggy and some can work like a charm.
what sort of cooler do you have/gona get/thinking of getting?

Keep in mind I am a bit novice at water cooling, but i'm using a XSPC rez, with a triple 120 rad with fans in a push/pull, also using a koolance cpu water block. My intentions are to cool the cpu only with the water loop. I can always add to the system if need be but the case is a cooler master HAFx and has plenty of air movement.

As for memory I was thinking on buying G.Skill Ripjaws Z series (32 gb) ->

But was unclear as to what MHz to go with on the specified Mobo.

Nope not here, no one will give you a hard time just for asking a question.

No matter what memory you buy, you will have to OC it if you want to run that memory at the stated frequency.

The RIVE motherboard and all X79 platforms will run memory at the default Intel memory frequency of 1600/1333.

So to get anything higher even if you do not wish to clock your CPU core you will need to OC your memory.

Welcome to ROG. 🙂
To help us help you - please provide as much information about your system and the problem as possible.

I'll Second that.
If they do, 'we' will take great pleasure in 'slapp'n' them around for ya. hahaha
This just answered the question that so many others may have been to bashful to ask.
U did them and us All a Service.
indeed ... Welcome to ROG.c.

heres a nice config calc if your interested, that way you will see what memory is compatible whit your board ( g-skills's )

Did you put the triple rad in the top of that HAF X ? If so how did you fit it with a push pull config.

Thanks all for the warm welcome. This might possibly be the friendliest forum out there. lol.

@FBM211 - It installed easily wiithout any modding under the frame. I attached 3 smaller fan under it and there are 2 larger fans on top (which I might not use if I don't have to) ....you know its easier if I just show you 😄

Yup, except I am 1 short. Why Cooler Master didn't send two of those larger fans is beyond me, but I'm now sure I'll even need them.
