Simple Themed Z97/Devils Canyon Planning stages.

I had originally planned on just upgrading my current build, which is a good machine. However with all the new stuff coming out I decided I am just going to guild a new Gaming Rig this year.

Unlike my previous build I want to have it thought out and planned from the ground up. No going back and having to correct issues because of shortcuts.

So the plan is to have a basic theme in the build. Black white and red using as few manufacturers as possible without compromising quality.

So far Corsair and Asus seem to be the best combo.

So here is my initial list. Some of these items are only announced so I know there will be some revisions.

Processor: i7 4790K

Logic Board: Maximus VII Formula (I assume we will see one soon)

Memory: Corsair Dominator Platinum 2400. 2x8GB for now I think.

Graphics Card: Asus GTX 780Ti (do we know anything about the 800 series yet that would justify waiting?)

Case: Corsair 780 when it is released or Obsidian 900D

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i or H110

Power Supply: Corsair AX 860i or AX1200i (If the 860 is sufficient I will stick with it but will go to the 1200 if needed)

Storage: Undecided. But I am hoping to see SSDs come down enough to make this an all SSD build. I don't see that happening however so probably a 120 M.2 card for the OS another SSD for the games I play the most and then a couple large hard drives for everything else.

Thoughts? What should I add or take away? Tweak?
I am in no rush for this build and will probably buy the parts a few at a time as they come on sale or I can find them.

single GPU the 860 is good to go, same whit dual ( but no OC then ), but IF you can afford it, go for the 1200W one, never skimp out on the power since its the heart of your system.

memory: do not mix, get the amount you need now or switch out when you is going to ad more.

900D, are you planing on going custom water down the road? if not look at the 760D
the 900D is large and i do mean LARGE case.

ssd's? 120gig OS ( dont use the M.2 go for normal ssd. ) games, look at the 500gig range if you have some games saved, lets take BF4 for example, that now is 40 gigs large ( says so in my folder ) this whit expansion packs.
add a few steam games and you will fill the drive fast.

cpu cooler, take a look at the H105 its thicker then the H100 and its close or larger then the H110 when it comes to rad dimentions in thicknes.
its a 120x2 ( 240 ) rad.

from what i know there is no news of the 800 series, since they have just spewed out the new kepler last year ( only the 780 and titan range have it )
but you never know what will come.

Hi kwelz...looks good to me....860 will be great for one GPU...would even run two cards at stock specs. Formula VII will be out soon...waiting is sometimes the best bit 😉

Points taken. I see no reason to skimp on the power supply. No reason to go with an aX1500 but the 1200 is a safe bet.

I like big cases. And water cooling is not out of the question in the future. I like the 760. However I would rather hold out for the 780.

I will check out the coolers. I use a H100i now. Wish they made a 280mm version with corsair link.

Storage is the real issue for me. My steam library alone is over 400GB. Add to that everything else and I am probably stuck going with a mechanical drive for that. My current setup is 2 SSDs and 2 mechanical drives and it works well enough.

What is your Budget for the whole CPU?

well if you are going to keep the current pc or not, or sell the cooler whit it or not i dont know.
but if you are going to keep the cooler you save a few bucks there.

I plan to keep my current computer as well. Two is one, one is none. Honestly I could keep a lot of my current system and save some money. I currently have all good components, if a bit dated. Maximus V Formula with a 3570K in a Storm Stryker case with 2 680s in SLI.

I don't have a real budget set for this build. I have learned the hard way that you spend what you need to spend.

Regarding your question about the 8xx series VGA's, you'll probably be waiting until next year before they see release.

Don't get the plats. Wayyyy overpriced memory.

Grab some G.Skill Trident X, or Corsair Dominator (GT, maybe)

EDIT: As far as a case goes, grab a Graphite 760T or Obsidian 750D.

The 900D is absolutely freaking massive. I mean MASSIVE. It has a lot more room than you need, even if you go full water with those components.

760T and 750D both have the room you need, and still look stylish.

The 2400 is probably pretty big overkill. The 1866 is much more reasonably priced. I currently use Gskill Sniper 1866 and love it. But since I am trying to stick with the Corsair/Asus build in this one I will probably be going Corsair

This goes bring up a good point though. How much performance difference am I going to see in memory?

For instance there is the Vengeance Pro

And then the Dominator Platinum.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233287

The Specs look the same. Identical timing and Latency. So what is the difference here?

Honestly is it Corsairlink and looks?
