RT-AX88U Slow download Speeds

I was wondering if somebody could help me with my setup, I don't know much about networking and all the technical talk so if help could be in plain English so I can understand I'd be very grateful.

I have Virgin Media Gig1 broadband, set in modem mode and using an RT-AX88U as my router.  It is linked via Cat 7 cable (I know this is overkill but I was given some spare Cat 7 cables).

I know I'm never going to get the full 1gb of download speed but when I do speed tests I'm getting a maximum of 95mb download speeds and about 8mb upload speeds.  This sounds like something is going seriously wrong.  Any suggestions?

Unsunghero1404, while Cat 7 cables are great, for your setup Cat 5e should be perfectly fine. The bigger issue might be with Virgin Media's configuration on your modem. Have you tried contacting them to see if there are any settings on their end that might be limiting your speeds?

1) Check for Network Congestion:

1. Disconnect Other Devices: Temporarily disconnect other devices from the network to see if the speed improves.
2. Monitor Network Usage: Use a network monitoring tool to check if any applications or devices are consuming a significant amount of bandwidth.
3. Contact ISP: If there's a widespread issue with the ISP's network, contacting their customer support may be helpful.

2) Verify Router Configuration:

1. Reset Router: Reset the router to its factory default settings and reconfigure it manually. This can help eliminate any incorrect settings.
2. Check Firmware: Ensure the router's firmware is up-to-date. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause performance issues.
3. Disable QoS: If Quality of Service (QoS) is enabled, try disabling it temporarily to see if it makes a difference.

3) Test Network Cable:

1. Swap Cable: Try using a different Cat 7 cable to rule out any issues with the current one.
2. Check Connections: Ensure the cable is securely connected to both the router and the device being tested.

4) Check ISP Connection:

1. Test Directly: Connect the device directly to the modem (bypassing the router) and perform a speed test. If the speeds are significantly faster, the issue likely lies with the router.
2. Contact ISP: If the direct connection also shows slow speeds, contact the ISP for further assistance.

5) Consider Advanced Troubleshooting:

1. Disable VPN: If using a VPN, try disabling it temporarily to see if it affects the speed.
2. Check DNS Settings: Try using a different DNS server (e.g., Google DNS) to see if it improves performance.

Hi @Unsunghero1404 before you get proper help in English, we will need to know what all you have connected and how.

Did you connect your CAT 7 cable into the port next to USB Port on one end and the other end of this cable to your Virgin Media modem? If you check your manual at https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/RT-AX88U/E15856_RT-AX88U_UM_v4_WEB.pdf?model=RT-AX88U I am referring to your WANT port labeled 12 in the picture below from PAGE 7.

When you are running your speed test, which device are you using for this test? Is the test device connected to one of the LAN ports on port labeled 13 in the above picture? Or are you connecting via WiFi to this ASUS Router for your testing?

If you can also post the make and model number of your Modem, that will also help us understand the device you are using as ISPs typically have lots of devices that they give to their customers and we don't know what you have in your home.
