ROG Maximus VI Impact + Prodigy Build

Hey Guys,

Im a tad new here, but I have kicked around for a little while offering my lot over on a little known Australian gaming board, and also with the otherside (EVGA).

I'm hoping to do a build for my better looking half, featuring the new Maximus VI Impact at its core, still deciding on a 4670k or the 4770k at this point, but just thought I would put down here for idea's and knowledge with regard to building...

Yes, I know the board isn't out, no I haven't obtained any hardware yet, also <3.

What I'm currently looking at to setup:

Maximus VI Impact

Intel i5 4670K

G.Skill Trident X F3-2400C10D-8GTX 8GB (2x4gb)

Silverstone Strider Plus 5550w SST-ST55F-G

All in a Bitfenix Prodigy.

What I'm unsure of is the mpcie slot (apparently takes m.2/ngff ssd's?) Would it be wise to pick up a SSD to fit the slot inorder to host the OS, and if I do so will the wireless part of the module still be operational?

I'm slowly catching up on Haswell, it seems with regard to overclocking they are quick to heat due to the thermal paste used, I'm not looking for 24/7 5ghz and am thinking of grabbing a Swiftech H220 to cool the cpu, and possibly the GPU when I get around to acquiring one (awaiting the 760 release) but it seems that health high mhz ram leads to decent iGPU performance, so I take it ram with a decent operating frequency is the go here? will the one above be fine?

Kinda hoping that I can find a SSD for the ngff/m.2 slot and use that for the OS, or swap if i cant mount it for OS needs, then raid up some mechanical disk's for all the other needs.

Also looking to take 'shortcuts' by grabbing the swiftech and look at using it to cool the cpu and gpu, so any fan recommendations and all would be terrific.

Looking forward to joining the RoG brotherhood in a small way, have always heard really good things and with the current lot of products on offer, my heart and wallet has been won over.

Cheers Guys,

Steve

Welcome to the Republic of Gamers forum, Steve.

You have a nice build there. The Prodigy is a nice case with lots of options. I don't know how Silverstone PSUs perform but you should look into something like a Seasonic or Corsair PSU. You mentioned overclocking so I'd definately leave some headroom for that. I'd get a 750W unit.

The H220 is a good cooler to have since it'd allow you to watercool your GPU in the future in case you see the need for that. And it will certainly fit in the Prodigy.

Why not settle for a regular SSD? I can see how mSATA SSD are useful in cases where space is an issue like in laptops. But since the Prodigy has so much space, you're better off getting a regular SSD. If you'll be using the platter drives for storage, you wouldn't need to RAID them. You'd just be increasing the boot time. I'd go for a 250GB SSD like the Samsung 840 and maybe 1TB or 4TB Western Digital Black drive.

Just my two cents. 😛

Thanks for the welcome Chino,

Silverstone's are pretty decent for efficiency since they are mostly built by Enhance, I was concerned about PSU size as the Silverstone units are generally a tad smaller than the average sized seasonic/corsair units.

Might look at a 600 or 750w unit then,

Reason I'm looking at the m.2/ngff is to try and use as much of the board as possible before looking to add via sata peripherals.

Plus if I can mount the SSD to the board it leaves more space re-expansion, and allows for a tidy setup instead of having to worry about ssd adaptors and the like. Good to know the Samsung 840 is still good to go, if I do go 2.5, but I have heard recently that some of the newer drives have decent performance, but then, it has always been decent firmware/support vs transfer speed with ssd's...

Looking at raiding mechanical as it will have duties for media creation, but its still debatable, might get to hot, so might leave it out tbh.

Thanks for the proofing, really looking forward to get my hands on this kit once its out... its been a while (1366)

if you are worried about the size most on the power supply most places will tell you the dimension and the prodigy will only allow a 6 or 6 and a half in i cant remember for sure but the corsair ax760i will fit i do know that. that the one i'm planning to use, with my almost identical build. although i will be using a 780ti, and keeping the wireless because four sata ports is plenty for any storage you have and even if you have to remove all the drive cages the prodigy will still fill every sata slot with 2.5 (2 on the io door, 1 on the bottom, 1 on back of psu cage). i would do that personally so you can keep the wireless option, and micro satas are small data size usually and more expensive if i remeber right. but i do love you choices in parts its just a puzzle figuring out what you can have in the case out of what you want.

Steve, have you finished this built? I would be curious about it...
