ram for Z97

I'm considering an RoG Z97 build. Is there a better ram for z97 and is there a sweet spot on ram speed, yet? It would be a gaming build with no OC's and probably using an i7-4770 and a GTX 780 Ti or two.

Any dual channel kit should be just fine. When it comes to ram speeds you really don't need more than regular 1600Mhz mem, you'll never be able to notice the difference vs say 2400Mhz ram. The only time you really need fast ram is for benching or if you just like tweaking and to have many mhz.

And 16Gb of 1600Mhz will probably be faster in windows than 8Gb of 2400Mhz, so I'd rather go with more mem rather than faster mem.

I know some people claim games run smoother with 2400mhz, that's just BS. For starters 2400Mhz really doesn't say very much about how fast the ram is, the timings of the mem are just as or more important.

Guess I could skip the RoG board and use a Tuf or WS since higher ram speeds wouldn't be important for me. Great, I've been eying the GRYPHON, lol.

The sweet spot for RAM is around 2133MHz. So if I was putting together a Z97, I would get a TridentX kit from G.Skill. They've always been my favorite because of their high performance, low price winning formula.

I see alot of people benching @2800Mhz on Ivy-E and Haswell, but again it's all in the timings. A 1866Mhz kit can be much faster than a 2400Mhz kit. And the sweetspot really depends on which IC's is on you RAM, going that far is probably a bit over complicated for a gaming build though 🙂 I see alot of people buying fancy 2400Mhz ram and then running them @1600Mhz because they didn't know they had to set to X.M.P profile in BIOS 🙂

Trident X is pretty good, but the latency on Trident X are always pretty meh, until you get into some of the higher clocks.
If you don't feel like tweaking your RAM, Corsair Vengeance Pro has some pretty low timings at 2133MHz, which is generally the sweet spot for real-world applications.
