pci-e lanes explained

I have maximus vi hero with waterblocks, the southbridge block prevents me from using double slot gpu cards, I had 2 290x with waterblocks but im upgrading. My new gpu wont fit first pci-e slot, If I run gpu(fury non-x) on the 2nd pci slot does it still run at 8x or 16x.
Look in last pic and you will see that the waterblock prevents me from using double slot card
2nd link shows with 290x's with waterblock

Hi pdastrly

Long time no see, where you been? Is your cpu still holding its overclock?

It looks like you will need to install waterblocks and turn them into a single slot card or put the original southbridge heatsink back on. As for using a gpu in the 2nd pcie slot it will run at x8.

pc still has same overclock, i don't use it much as i would like too. Sold the gpu's awhile ago. Picked gigabyte fury non-x but they dont make waterblock for this version(custom pcb)
I was hoping i could just put it in 2nd slot for now until the radeon pro duo comes out. Any downside to running at 8x?

You can run it is the 2nd pcie slot, performance loss is negligible to none.

yay, do you think the fury non-x will crossfire with the unreleased radeon duo pro?

im sure you can tri-fire a 295x2 with 290/x

PCI Lane Question: ASUS 970 Pro Gaming/Aura motherboard, one ASUS GEFORCE GTX 750 TI GPU, installing M.2 PCIe V2.0 x4 SSD system device and using PCIe-based RAID controller. Anybody know of a tool to show lane utilization with the AMD chipset? May be a stupid question, I know the chipsets allows for a finite number of PCIe lanes, just wondering if there's any simple way to see how they're used/allocated. Got my head full gearing up to new UEFI spec's, not enough working neurons to wrap my brain around PCIe lanes just now. I know if I were running multiple GPUs I'd be banging into some limits, but with single GPU, M.2 x4 SSD device and x2 or x4 RAID controller, how do the lanes 'lay out'? Thx, jex40 (Lorin Boyack)
