One Last Time Before I Build

Hi everyone,

About two weeks ago, I posted on here looking to get some ideas on a parts list for my ultimate gaming rig. The time has come and soon I'll be building this. I guess I would like some last minute validation on the parts I have chosen. What did I do right? Wrong? What would you change? Thank you all for your help in this. I look forward to building this by the end of the month. (and I'll be putting pictures up on PCPartPicker of course). here's the parts list

I've used the Kraken and it's a good cooler but I like the EK Predator more. The EK doesn't use software.

That is true. I have both the Predator 240 and Predator 360 for my rigs. They are just top notch. EK recently released some other sizes as well. 🙂

Yeah with the EK Predator 240/360, 2 fittings, a couple feet of tubing and a little coolant you could incorporate the crosschill block in with the cpu.

Mine looks like this.

Just a couple of things......IMHO of course

You went with a lot of quiet things then add a 3TB Seagate?

Steer clear of those who provide ultra cheap copies of the OS. I just had a run in with this very company not a month ago when I did my build. All they provided was a key by email after payment posted of course. The key didn't work, said it was already in use. Contacted their support which they did respond fairly quickly they proceeded to tell me to call Microsoft to activate and tell them I changed machines because all of their keys are used keys. Im like WTF there Homer? Used? You do realize that in the M$ Eula there is no such thing as a used key, you can transfer it with a machine or if you were the original owner you can transfer it to another machine but you cant sell used keys. They refused to issue a refund on get this......used software! LMAO I had to get my credit card company involved to get my money back. Do yourself a favor and just buy the OEM from the egg or B&H photo has it for $10 less. Its worth it in the long run to have a solid piece of mind for $30 more.

On the memory, never been a big fan of patriot but just know that ASUS boards are picky, especially when it comes to running past stock clock speeds. They have a very long list of qualified vendors and sticks that they have already tested and verified to work. On that very long list there is only one Patriot listed in the 3000Mhz flavor. The higher the clock the fewer vendors there are. They seem to have good luck with GSkill.

Optical drive, unless you really need it and use it they are slow. pretty much every software title has a downloadable version that so long as you aren't on dial up is pretty much guaranteed to be faster. My first install of GTAV off of the optical media took forever! Im talking like 6 hours! Downloaded version took less than half of that and it was on their servers. Get it in the off hours like early morning and it goes even quicker. I bought an external USB 3.0 bluray that I can use across multiple platforms for when I really need it which turns out isn't very often.

I bought the Corsair H115i and I have to say........Im not at all impressed. It works to an extent, the software is crapola as the only thing is does well is control the color of the light. Fan speed can be linked to your CPU unless you want to get the crap scared out of you when it goes from quiet to horrendously loud. linking it to the water temp seems to work the best. Not happy with the surface of the block either. By far the roughest surface Ive ever seen on a water block and Ive seen alot. Seems no one shows a good picture but the corsair has had zero polishing. very rough machined surface. I watned to be lazy with this build and go all in one but its looking like if I want to do that its time to break out the find grit sand paper and lapping compound to resurface the water block.

Well allow me to explain a little bit on my choices.

The 3TB hard drive is because I want a data drive. Simple as that. I've since switched out my 1TB SSD with a 500 GB since I could save a small bit on it and it's mainly going to be an application drive

Unfortunately I've already bought the OS key so I hope my experience goes better than yours and I won't have to get my bank involved

I went with that RAM because it was recommended by Tom's Hardware but it's on backorder so I'll probably cancel it because I want to finish this build.

You never know when you'll need an optical drive. True a lot of stuff is moving to download but every so often you'll find a piece of software that comes on disk. It was $20 so I'll be ok with that
.
Good thing I didn't go with the Corsair cooler then.

Thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate it

NZXT Kraken X61 106.1 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($114.99 @ B&H)

Noisy at full bore. Kraken X61 uses high RPM noisy fans. I'm not a fan of AIO, but if I were, I'd be looking at the Corsair H115i. Someone I know has one and replaced the fans for Noctua versions. He's very happy.

The new Kraken X62 is better if you definitely want a Kraken. The CAM software is better. Pump and fans are a bit quieter.

I would without doubt recommend GSkill Ripjaw V. Specifically designed with Skylake in mind and uses top-notch Samsung modules. The 3200 MHz modules really shine.

For keyboard, Corsair Straffe RGB with Cherry MX silent keys. Great keyboard, I love mine.

Logitech G502 Proteus RGB mouse is fantastic too.

That's why I replaced the fans on the X61 with the Fractal Design ones. It'll run a fair bit quieter with those instead of the stock ones.

My only issue with the X62 is that only NZXT has it at the moment and according to their website the soonest I can get one is the end of December.

I ended up going with the G.Skill TridentZ DDR4-3200 16GB kit. Had good reviews and better supported by the motherboard.

Thank you for your input

I went with the 64GB 3400 MHz kit. Ran base clock to 200 and multiplier to 23 for an easy 4.6 GHz on the CPU and got all of the 3400 out of the RAM.

I had ordered a corsair kit then returned it without even opening the package when I found out it was not on the approved vendor list. Ive always had good luck with Gskill sticks in conjunction with ASUS products. Put ripjaws in my laptops and the Trident in my most recent build.
