On board RIVE sound of Creative USB X-Fi?

danno81

Quite simply; I am currently using the Rampage IV Extreme on-board sound for 5.1, I have a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi 5.1 USB device sitting in a drawer not doing anything.

http://www.ebuyer.com/239671-creative-sound-blaster-x-fi-surround-5-1-soundcard-external-usb-70sb109...

Any opinions on what's better? I am looking for a lazy answer because I'm currently not motivated enough to run though a series of tests with both.

My AV receiver and speaker are pretty high end so it will probably make a difference in places. The on-board I'm using now is pretty decent via optical.

Any advice would be appreciated. In anticipation of the "Why don't you check them out then you'll know" or "why bother blah blah" sort of answers, I admit I'm lazy so don't want to go through the cycles of game/audio/movie comparison route as it would take too long and I don't have the time or motivation. I also really enjoy talking about hardware so I'd rather have a chat about it than just silently get on with it 🙂

Thanks everyone.

Dan.

Thanks. I like that answer as it means I have to do nothing and keep it as it is 🙂

If there was a benefit of having the creative I would have changed it though. It'll be powering the wired Astro Gamer A40 soon too if that changes anything.

Based on my own experiences -- avoid creative. I went with RIVF in order to get the enhanced onboard sound -- i dont regret it.

if you HAD to buy a sound card, look at the asus line.

@HiVizMan

Thank you, my system was a result of my plan to build the best machine I could. I spent many many hours tweaking memory timings, voltages, clocks, etc and running tests. It's been a long run but I'm very happy with the outcome. Games fly, which is a nice side effect of putting the hardware together and admiring it from just a hardware point of view 🙂

@Xaanix

Thank you for the advice. I think, after the replies, I'll stick with the board as it is. I just had a nagging feeling with a £75 sound card sitting in a drawer that I may have missed a trick by leaving it off, but as you say the board has a pretty high end chip in it already. I'll keep the card as a backup in the event anything goes wrong in the future. I had a P6T Deluxe before the RIVE and the sound failed completely on it after a few years which is when I bought the creative until I build the new system.

As for me I would go with the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1. I never use onboard sound........... also if I was you, do a test while gaming, My Sound Blaster ZxR just kills the onboard of my Rampage IV Formula in games.

Great; now, after looking at reviews, I'm going to buy the ZxR. Thank you very much for wasting more of my money! 🙂

Just for the record, RIVF has better sound than the RIVE. (Supreme FX III on the RIVF).

Havent read about the creative card you mentioned. I spent a bunch of money on an X-Fi Titanium (long ago) and it was garbage -- ended up ripping it out and throwing it on the shelf... I've pretty much sworn off creative after that.
