OC/Gaming Rig

RTS001
Level 7
This is my second build. Once I finished the first one (which was for video editing/gaming) Computex started and just has me itching for a new rig. I should preface the fact that I have not over clocked anything before. But I have a lot of free time, and if I fry the whole thing it's not like my life savings i'll just buy another one. WITH THAT SAID...

Budget: $3000-4000
Main uses of intended build: OC/Gaming

So Far I have

Intel 4770K $350
Corsair AX1200i
Corsair H100i (Both for $375 thanks to 20%off)
In Win D Frame Limited Edition Red $400
Samsung 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC $240
WD Black 2TB $160

What I am on the fence about is:

Motherboard: Maximus VI Extreme $400 VS Formula $??? (I am in no hurry)
This will be an open build so I will most likely water cool at some point. (Starting with the H100i then moving on to custom water cooling setup)

RAM: Is the second worth the 250$?
G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2800 (PC3 22400) Desktop Memory Model F3-2800C12D-16GTXDG
Cas Latency: 12
Voltage: 1.65V
Multi-channel Kit: Dual Channel Kit
Timing: 12-14-14-35
$600

G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2933 (PC3 23400) Desktop Memory Model F3-2933C12D-16GTXDG
DDR3 2933 (PC3 23400)
Timing 12-14-14-35
Cas Latency 12
$850

Video Card: this one I am open to suggestions. I have a Titan on my first build it's great... I could wait for the Poseidon and Formula? or SLI a few GTX 770 cards...If you were me what would you put?

Motherboard: If you'll be doing casual overclocking, go with the MVIF. And since you mentioned about custom watercooling in the future, you can take advantage of those hybrid thermal pipes.

RAM: Is the second kit worth $250? No. Is 2800MHz RAM even worth it? Neither. The standard frequency for gaming is 1600MHz. Anything faster is just overkill. But if you have deep pockets, get the fastest and most expensive one. 😛

Video Card: If you're only gaming on one monitor, the GTX 780 will do just fine. When you do more than one monitor in the future, drop in another GTX 780 or get the Poseidon/Formula when it's available.

Thanks for the input. I mean I don't want to throw money away but I don't mind spending extra cash to have better performance even if it's not a huge margin.

So this for $240 would be suffice?

Remember that if you're looking for peak performance, you'll have to pay top dollar for it. With that said and done, you won't the difference between 2400MHz and 2933MHz in gaming nor in real world usage. You'll notice the difference in benchmarks. That's about it.

I spent a lot of money, but the only thing i may comment about is the RAM, i think going with something above 2400MHz is pointless, as stated before, 1600MHz is plenty, so why not go with something say 2133 or even 2400MHz? i see many sticking with 1600-1866MHz and few with 2133MHz, very rare i see some going with 2400 or over that.

You can buy 2 of that one to have 32GB and still save a lot for just the RAM you posted before.

If you have Titan, then why not another Titan as well, if you save on some components for example the RAM itself, it may leave room in your budget to buy another Titan, you know you want the best.

I think, here is about OC'ing for gaming... as opposite of OC'ing for benchmarking... - if so, I would go with the MVIF, the 4770K and a TridentX RAM kit at max 2400MHz... (you won't observe the differences between the frequencies anyway)

I'm reading more and more place that the 4770k is gonna run even hotter than the 3770k does, so you really need a good cooling for it... - by good cooling I mean as big radiator as you can with a very good airflow...

The closed loop coolers performs around where the top air cooler does, the real difference is the airflow... based on the reviews i read, I would not keep the 4770k over 4.5-4.7MHz with such a cooler... for those frequencies you may need some more serious custom cooler... - these if you really want long life of your CPU...

I plan on just getting the thing up and running with the h100i. Then moving to a full water cooled rig.

I was looking on new egg...on certain sets they have "XMP Support For 4th Gen Intel Core CPUs & Z87" in green. Is that a requirement?

I decided to go with G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2666 (PC3 21300) snagged it for 215.99 with a 10% off

You will not regret it, those are really good sticks of ram. I was quite amazed how well they clocked.
