Need PSU and RAM recommendations for X79 system

Saphira
Level 7
Here's the deal, I'm building a computer to run math experiments, work on web development, and do some gaming. I bought most of the parts after doing some research, but now I've hit a wall. I need to buy RAM and a PSU, for some reason all the brands have got me highly confused and would appreciate it if someone could recommend good products or help me decide between those that I've thought about. If I'm missing any hardware, other than the mouse, let me know. Here's what I've bought so far.

Mobo: Asus Rampage IV Extreme
CPU: Intel i7 3960X
Graphics Card: Asus GTX680 Top Edition
Heatsink: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011
HD1: Seagate ST2000DM001 Barracuda 7200RPM 2 TB SATA 6 GB/s NCQ 64 MB Cache 3.5-Inch
HD2: Western Digital WD Green WD10EZRX 1TB IntelliPower SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5
Optical drive: Lite-On LightScribe 24X SATA DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive IHAS424-98
Keyboard: RAZER Black USB Wired BlackWidow Ultimate Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

Haven't bought, but I'm thinking about it:

Case: NZXT Phantom Red

Monitor:
1. ASUS VK248H-CSM Black 24" 2ms (GTG) HDMI Widescreen LED-Backlit LCD Monitor 250 cd/m2 ASCR 50000000:1 Built-in Speakers&Webcam
2. ASUS VG Series VG23AH Black 23" 5ms HDMI Widescreen 3D LED Monitor 250 cd/m2 ASCR 80,000,000:1, IPS Panel, Height & Swivel Adjust

RAM [I really want to get 32 GB RAM (4 X 8 GB), not changing my mind about it. Looked into Corsair GT, but it was quite expensive in comparison to these]:

1. Patriot Viper 3 PV332G213C1QKRD 32GB Desktop Memory Module Quad Kit - DDR3, 4x8GB, 2133MHz, CL11, PC3-17000, 1.5V, XMP Ready

Hi Saphira...
And welcome ROG!

I'm not much of an expert builder... And I'm definitely no expert as far as RAM is concerned...

But as far as the PSU is concerned... I would definitely steer clear of any power supply that's rated as less than 80+ Silver at least, and no lower than Gold if at all possible.
As for the wattage, I think that 1000 watts is a bit (if not a lot) of an overkill... Most power supplies' efficiency drops significantly when running at lower load... So you might want to consider a lower wattage PSU. But don't undershoot and get one that's too low of a wattage...

You might want to consider using a PSU calculator such as this one or this one to get an approximation of the wattage that your system is going to use, and then add some extra watts to that... So if you get, say, 600 Watts... Get a 750 or 850 watt PSU.
But don't take my word for it... Like I said, I'm a novice at these things...

Hope this helps you a bit,
Cheers...
And Welcome again to ROG! 🙂

Hey Saphira, congrats on the new build.

I've had excellent results with the seasonic xp-860/1000 platinum series and corsair dominator-gt 1.5v 16gb kits(red/black). You can't really go past seasonic, enermax and corsair psu's in my opinion. Gskill also sell great ram as well.
I have a formula with a 2133mhz 16gb kit and nzxt phantom in red. I went for a red and black theme. For me it was either a black or red phantom. You might want to look on nzxt's site, they sell the clear side panel as an accessory for this tower. Unfortunately, they don't yet stock ferrari badges 😉

Make sure you have clearance with the ram heatsinks and your chosen cooler. The last noctua i used was the nhd14 and i was using gskill low profile ripjaws memory. I personally chose the h100 to give a neater and clearer presentation of the internals, if you like i can show you a picture so you can see how i have mounted the radiator before installation.

All the best with your build and welcome to the site

Daveo

Daveo;
You were right about the Noctua! It fits, but it was a pain in the rear to install and it looks massive. I might change it in the near future. =P

Of the RAM you listed I would recommend this last kit. The Z series go hand in glove on X79 or even this http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=439 XMP 1.3 ready kit. Oh, and this will fit under most coolers it's pretty low profile

I almost fainted when I saw the OCZ ZX series PSU in there....see why....http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?19201-RAMPAGE-IV-EXTREME-and-Wagner&highlight=wagner

I would go with a Seasonic PSU maybe the X 850 or P-1000

Please give the OCZ PSU a pass.

Any of the GSkill will work but the Z series is perfect.

PSU - Seasonic is very good, and I have had good things with the AX and HX series of PSU's

2. Corsair Professional Series HX1000 80 Plus Certified Modular

super psu..

And a dual rail..

so silent, its almost inaudible..

I ve got one of those, and it have never failed..

and lots of hardwired xtra connectors..

Ocz/Antec..... Maybe not the best solutions, most of the time..

But Ocz got some mighty fine ssd's..

and may i add, the platinum series from seasonic features a hybrid fan design, it turns off and operates with no noise whatsoever.

Thanks for replying so promptly and for welcoming me to the ROG group. Considering all the feedback, I've decided to go with the G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) Desktop Memory Model F3-2133C9Q-32GZH. As far as the PSU is concerned, I've eliminated both OCZ models (thanks for the link, Arne Saknussemm). I've noticed nobody mentioned either Rosewill PSU, is it a bad brand? Has anybody got any experience with it?

With PSU's it is all about who makes them. Some of the brand names mean nothing, it is who makes them.

Search and see what this nut case thinks about those PSU's or any of the PSU's you are wanting to use. He is the one review site I will listen to when it comes to PSU's
