Extra information about desired system:
I have already purchased most of the components for my first water cooled build. It will spend most of it's time crunching numbers with folding@home, possibly some video conferencing for work as well as gaming with the Oculus Rift when the consumer version comes out. I already have a EVGA Supernova 1200w power supply, 6700k CPU, 8gig G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4, LG Blu-ray burner, Corsair 780T case, Windows 10 and a lot of water cooling stuff. For my current PC I chose a sandy bridge CPU and added parts to it over time. I am considering temporarily moving the GTX 780 to this new build until pascal comes out. I do intend to OC, but one that stable for 24/7 use.
The big question I have is 'which motherboard do I go with?' I have built a bunch of computers for office use and my current gaming computer listed above with asus motherboards, so I want to stick with that. I have never tried a ROG motherboard though and was wondering what that would get me that the asus z170 Deluxe did not have. I do like the idea of having an optical output with DTS connect for my Astro headset. It looks like going with a ROG board will get me access to a bunch of utilities. Hero and Ranger seem pretty similar in price and features. The oddball price-wise is the Extreme, with some rumors of a $500US cost. Other than the OC panel and being physically bigger, what does it have that the Hero and Ranger don't? Since this is a high budget rig my initial impulse was to go with the maximus viii extreme, but the asus marketing does not seem to show much in the way of justification of doubling the price over the Hero or Ranger.
Thank you for your assistance. 🙂
