Maximus Z790 Extreme choice for the PCIe slot for GPU

Hi everybody 🙂

I recently bought a 14900KF with a Maximus Z790 Extreme and from my old x299 i've kept my Strix RTX 3080 Ti OC and my 2 Aquacomputer KryoM2 PCIe 3.0 x4 (one is for OS/softwares and the other for games). My case is a CaseLabs TH10a + pedestal.

Due to my EK waterblock and the active backplate, i can't put her on the first slot without remove the Anime matrix radiator of the M.2_1 slot but i don't want. I'm not going to use the motherboard slot for NVMe. But i plane to use the ROG DIMM2 with 2 NVMe for data in the coming months.

If i understand the web page for my motherboard i think i can do that:
- first slot PCIe 5.0 x16 ----> KryoM2 for my OS run at 4x
- second slot PCIe 4.0 x4 ----> KryoM2 for games run at 4x
- third slot PCIe 5.0 x16 ----> my RTX 3080Ti run at 16x

Or the other solution is bought a riser cable to put him on first slot with a vertical graphic stand.

What the best solution ?

When you install a M2 and M2_1, the second Pcie express will be disable.

If you put the gpu on the Pcie 2 the gpu will run at 8x (if nothing is on M2_1)

Gpu has to be install on Pcie16x1 and install M2 on M2_1

Since we are here remember to plug the PD_12v_pwr so the gpu get 60w on the pie slot.

And since we are also here you can:

M2_1 and M2_2 are wire to the cpu.  Example you can put a capture card on Pcie16_2 and still use the second BUT you will drop to 8x.and M2_3 is gen4. to the chipset.

Even this above you can use the im card with 2 more gen4 nvme on the dim card .

Aside what i put here is what is on the manual.

IF you have gpu that does not fit cause arear cooling, you have to use a riser to put the card vertical.

Hello MrAgapiGC,

Thanks for reply. I have read the page of the motherboard and the manual, i know my english is not peerfect. Like i say on my first post, i'm not going to use the motherboard NVMe slot so for the 2 PCIe 5.0 i think it's not a problem.

I bought in my country a vertical stand kit but it's not compatible with my case without cut some part and i don't want that. This will not be this solution.

First solution:
- first slot PCIe 5.0 x16 ----> my RTX 3080Ti run at 16x (i must remove the M2 radiator with OLED screen)
- second slot PCIe 4.0 x4 ----> KryoM2 for my OS run at 4x
- third slot PCIe 5.0 x16 ----> KryoM2 for games run at 4x

Second solution:
- first slot PCIe 5.0 x16 ----> KryoM2 for my OS run at 4x
- second slot PCIe 4.0 x4 ----> KryoM2 for games run at 4x
- third slot PCIe 5.0 x16 ----> my RTX 3080Ti run at 8x

I'm good for the 2 solutions and i read on reddit if a GPU run at Gen 5.0 x8 it's equal to a Gen 4 16x exactly ?

all info is what i put on my notes. Up yo you the route to use.

Hi @GhostR1d3r , it appears that you are trying to use parts from your older setup and are also going for aesthetics over getting the best performance of the new system.

As long as you do not install anything in M.2_1 slot under your OLED screen your solution 2 would be the only option for you to give it a try.

Please note while PCIe specification does allow backwards compatibility, the support for backwards compatibility will depend upon every component to work in this downgrade mode. What I mean here is that your two PCIEX16 (G5) slots are coming from CPU and the CPU will support PCIe Gen 5 and Gen4. Since you are talking about mixing GEN 3 via KyroM2 things may or may not work. You just have to give it a try. If the KyroM2 cards give you stability issue, I would let them go and wait till you can buy GEN4 or GEN5 components to connect with CPU for better stability of your system.

I hope this information helps you move forward.
