If you are going strictly for OC the CPU is a no brainer. The 6700K is one of the best chips ever for OC IMO. I hit 4.6 effortlessly. I'm confident that if I change up cooling and go a little more extreme I could get 5Ghz out of it or at least close to it. Seems these chips are not part of the silicon lottery. While there are some that can push a little farther I've not heard of any flat out duds. From what Ive seen the 6 core and up CPUs are not so easy to OC.

I tossed this very decision around in my head for better than a month. Cost was not part of my decision. What I ended up buying was

I7 6700K

Maximus VIII extreme/assembly. That decision was simply aesthetics as the rest of it the standard extreme are identical. Im not even using the front audio panel or the 10Ghz Ethernet card.

For RAM I went with 3400 Mhz Gskill trident 64GB kit. Right off the verified vendors list in the MOBO manual.

The only reason I would have considered X99 was if I was going to really jump off the cliff with 3 or 4 1080 cards in SLI. The Z170 chipset handles two of them perfectly. I ended up with 2x Strix GTX 1080 AG gaming cards.

This configuration gets just shy of 25K firestrike scores at stock settings. Nothing better than when you hit the compare online option and get better than 99% of all others. 4.6 Ghz OC on the CPU via 200 mhz BCLK and 23 multiplier @ 1.375V with RAM at 3400Mhz and the factory OC of the GPUs added another 2500 points.

If you want to compete with the top scores it has to be the 10 core and X99 but this is very expensive and the OC fun to be had is limited

Lots of late 5960Xs have a whole lot more OC headroom

Buying now I'd wait http://wccftech.com/intel-kaby-lake-core-i7-7700k-price-leak/

Min turbo on top end Kaby lake is 4.5 as it is....improved/tweaked version of existing CPUs should give good performance with good cooling...maybe even delid one...put it on ice water

I'd presume the IMC will improve somewhat letting you run even higher frequency RAM....
