i7 8700k being detected as 4 cores 8 threads

Hello, as the title states, my i7 8700k is being detected as 4 cores 8 threads by HWInfo, CPUZ as well as the Task Manager. I'm on the ASUS Z370-F motherboard.

Not really sure where to go from here as I've never come across and issue like this.

Make sure there hasn't been a firmware update for your board. I'm not sure what version shipped on those boards.

Have you checked the stamp on the top of the IHS? Also, where did you buy it? Maybe you don't actually have an 8700K.
A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station…

Latest BIOS 0419 for the Z370-F. Got it from Newegg and it says 8700k on the CPU and all other specifications and the BIOS all point to it being an 8700k, plus there are no Coffee Lake 4 core, 8 thread CPU's available.

HWInfo says it's 6 Cores 12 Threads but active monitoring only has 4 cores shown active and the other two have nothing, and as I said, CPUZ and Task Manager both show 4 core, 8 threads.

I have a strong feeling it's the motherboard, as my overclocks aren't applying either. Just as a test, I set all cores to 4.7 but in all monitoring software it hasn't changed from the 3.7 stock speed. My Memory settings work, but something is going on there clearly.

Edit: Also tested Cinebench, where it's being detected as 4 cores 8 threads and I got an obscenely low score of 785. I should be getting around 1400.

Also for more information, my full system specs are:

i7 8700k cooled by EK Predator 240
ASUS Z370-F
Zotac GTX 1080 Ti Amp Extreme
32GB TridentZ RGB(running at 3200Mhz currently)
Seasonic Prime Titanium 850w
2 NVME M.2 SSDs and 2 SATA 2.5" SSD's
Creative AE-5 Sound Card

Hi Enad1

In the bios on the Advanced tab - CPU Configuration, double check Active Cores is set to All and hyperthreading is enabled.

If it's set to all, have you tried resetting to defaults and updating the bios ?

It's set to all, and setting it to anything less doesn't seem to make a difference when I get into windows(similar to how my overclock is not applying).

And yes, I did reset to defaults.

Nothing, beyond my memory settings, seem to be applying in the BIOS.

This is a long shot but is it possible it's a damage pin on the CPU? I've heard of RAM going into single channel mode with damaged pins. Or perhaps the CPU itself is damaged?

Any help would be appreciated on this as I'm out of ideas.

can be a eff up on the bios file it self, if no one else post this problem it can be other things.

I've tried two separate BIOS's now. Neither have changed.

I bought a cheap, returnable board on Newegg so I can pop the CPU in there and see if that is the issue. If it still persists, then I guess it's the CPU and I was somehow unlucky enough to end up with a borked CPU, which almost NEVER happens.

Hello

Perform a fresh install of the operating system.

I had that thought, but I'm going to test it on another board and SSD before I do that because I'd rather not lose my Windows install on my main build if that isn't truly the issue.
