Help with ROG Maximus Z790 Hero, 13900K and RTX 4090 TUF Gaming OC

Hi All,

I will be purchasing the ROG Maximus Z790 Hero LGA1700 ATX Desktop Motherboard and Intel Core i9 13900K Desktop Processor.

I'm confused with DRAM but think I need Corsair DOMINATOR PLATINUM RGB 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5 DRAM 5200MHz C40 Desktop RAM (CMT64GX5M2B5200C40) - Does anyone know if this is OK?

Thanks in advance from down under.
Kym

P.S.
Also, I was looking at MSI MAG CORELIQUID C360 CPU Cooler which I wouldn't mind a little advice on.
Of course I'll add 4 or 5 case fans in the Thermaltake Core W100 Super Tower also.

Hello Kym H

Welcome to the ROG forum.

Your ram is ok but any reason you need 64GB?

32GB is more than enough for gaming and you could go with a faster kit, say 32GB 6000MHz - 6400MHz.

The 360mm radiator could mount in the front or the top of the TT core w100 case.

Thanks so much for your reply Nate.
The reason for the 64GB of RAM is that I've heard from a number of people in the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 community, that when running the SIM with a number of other applications, they benefit by the system using 48GB or more.

I am one of those using a number of other apps with the SIM and with 32GB of RAM on this PC (Z390 with i7-8700K at 4800Mhz with 2080TI with 1-4K and 1 2K monitor plus a 12" 1080p touch screen) I can drag the SIM down to 8-9fps when landing a study level airliner at a large, detailed airport.

The only other games I play are SIM Racing and they've all been fine on this current system.

Thanks again.

Ok, if you must have 64GB for flight sim, I might look at a faster 64GB memory kit.

G.Skill Trident Z5 is good memory, it costs a little more, here is a 64GB (2x32GB) 6400MHz C32 kit.

This memory might take some manual voltage tuning to get stable.

Hello,

For plug-and-play with 2x32GB modules, I would opt for 5600MT kits listed on the QVL. If you are comfortable with tuning the system manually, 6000MT to 6400MT kits are available, most of which are SK Hynix which is preferable for overclocking. If the budget allows, I would personally opt for anything between 6000MT and 6400MT and tune the system.

I have GSkill Z5 RGB DDR5 6000 RAM in my Z790 Hero. 2X32GB and they run at XMP 6000 without a hitch. I couldn't find any faster RAM available at the time I put my system together, so you might say I "settled" for 6000. My 13900 KF runs at 5.5 with no overclocking (tried a 6% OC and it wasn't stable.) I don't know enough about tweaking voltages yet to try manual OC, so I'm leaving well enough alone for now. The system is smooth and fast right now. I don't know that I'd see a difference even if I had faster memory and OC'd the CPU to 6.0. I guess it's like my 2010 Camaro that I swapped a forged 427 into. That car dynoed at 530 rwhp. Would 550 HP ben better? Probably, but I couldn't get good traction in any gear with "just" 530 rwhp, so what good would 20 more hp been?

Some games will benefit from higher frequency just as much as latency as both are intrinsically related. The other question is whether one *needs* 64GB, as this will hinder overclocking range over 16gb modules. Just one of the things to keep in mind that even some seasoned users overlook.
