GPU question/advice

Hello all,

My system below, is what you guys all helped me put together a few months ago and is incredible. So, thank you!

Cooler Master Cosmos II
Asus Maximus VI Formula Z87
i7-4770k Haswell (no OC yet - tho it's at 4k mhz using AI Suite III)
16 GB G.Skill Trident X Series
Cooler Master Seidon 240M - Liquid CPU cooler
750GB SSD
1250W SeaSonic PSU
EVGA GTX-680 gpu x1 (came from my older computer system I had prior to the new build)

******

I'm looking at going for an upgrade on my graphics card. I only game, so am curious if this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121838 ASUS DirectCU II GTX780TI-DC2OC-3GD5 GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card Would be a worthy step to take?? I really like what I've read about it and how it looks too, obviously. But...

Should I wait for the next generation to appear in the next few months if my 680 is so so at handling things?

Or..

Do I just take the leap and go SLI with two of those GTX780Ti's and be fine for a couple years?

I have a powerful system and yes, I need to up my memory timings, and do some direct OCing in BIOS. But I don't mind taking this step and spending $1500 on two GPU's if it's worthy.

Any opinions? Any dates/hear say on future graphic cards being released that would be worth waiting for?

Much appreciate it guys, many thanks

The Maxwell cards aren't going to be released until early 2015 so that is a little ways off. Two gtx 680's will out perform one gtx 780ti but not by much. You would be further ahead going with the 780ti's as you said and would last a few years. Or you could add another gtx 680 and wait for Maxwell in 2015. It all comes down to your budget.

Thanks Nate152, that clears that question I had pretty much, I'll consider things and make a decision soon.

I use a 24'' HP w2408 Wide LCD @ 1920x1200

I just want to be able to easily handle Ultra graphics on most games out there, and playing Rome 2, with 7 mods installed, and tens of thousands of men on the battle field, and huge walled cities and action, equal a lot of lag and jerking..at times... so hence, me wanting to get into the better GPU's, for better cooling features, quieter, speed, handling and to obviously get it off the list of area's to fix/upgrade.

Two other area's are yes, OCing the CPU and raising the memory clock speeds up from default, which I should have done, which is important I know. I do really like the visual candy those new GTX 780 Ti give as well as how they perform.

This system I have is flawless and has been simply astounding in it's performance. Going SLI graphic cards would be what I'm sure keeps me more than strong for a couple years maybe, and puts a finishing touch on the system performance. Course, one card would probably do just as well since this computer is 99% used just for gaming I guess. /shrugs I just love the grace of power!! lol

I have the means to do this if I chose, it's just I don't want to buy into something that easily will be trumped by something very soon being released that will far surpass what these 780ti's give. I want to think smart. But I didn't build this system to have to play it close to the same graphics/speed (it's WAY quicker yes lol) as my old system. It's whatever I know.

Anyways, thanks for the help guys. This forum and ASUS people/products have been so amazing. So incredible.

At the fast rate that technology evolves, there is practically no way to future proof. And while one can be waiting for the next best thing, it might never come. At this moment in time, I see two scenarios. One consists of you sticking with the GTX 680 until Maxwell comes out. Dropping in another GTX 680 is a waste of money from my persepective. The other scenario involves you selling the GTX 680 for whatever you can and invest in a GTX 780Ti which will be more than enough for gaming at 1080p using Ultra settings. If you want to lessen the whole buyer remorse, get the cheaper R9 290X from AMD. It's performance is very close to the GTX 780Ti but way cheaper.

Much appreciate it Chino, good thoughts on this matter. Going right now to order a GTX 780Ti I'm sure one of them will do. When I grow to a 32'' LCD i'll do that when those Maxwell's come out, and then go SLI with that future upgrade.

IF you are thinking of TV ( not 100% here just guessing )
you will be limited to the input refresh rate on it witch will be 60HZ.
even how high they list the HZ on the TV.

TV is still @ 1920x1080 unless you get a 4K. So the 32" TV still draws as many pixels as the 24" would so it would be same performance.

Now go up in pixel count and things really start to go.

I have a 27@2560x1440 and can crunch most games Ultra with 2x290X.
