GPU compatibility list for ROG Strix z790-e gaming wifi?

Hello,

I'm running a ROG Strix z790-e gaming wifi board with an intel 13900K. I've recently upgraded my GPU from an RTX 2070 to a MSI RTX 5080 Gaming Trio. The card will only output video about 1 in 5 boot ups. I contacted MSI to troubleshoot the issue and they asked me to verify that the GPU is certified for my board. I can't find any certification list though. Does anyone know how to find that?

Thanks,

D

Oddly, I had a similar issue on my Astral OC when I transitioned to a waterblock. My issue was that the GPU wasn't fully inserted, though. The fact that the system does occasionally make it and then crash could indicate a similar problem.

Hi @Digitalink2008

There's no reason the GPU wouldn't be compatible. Are you using a riser cable at all? Have you tried setting PCIE16_1 to GEN4 to see if it makes any difference?

Hello @Silent_Scone. Yep. I've been going through the troubleshooting steps. I flashed my board to Bios v3001 and set the PCIE16 slot to force Gen4 rather than AUTO. Not sure if it made a difference though. The card only gives a video signal about 1 in 5 boot ups. When it does make it all the way to Windows, the system crashes when I try to install the NVIDIA drivers.

Oh, I should maybe mention that my previous GPU was a RTX 2070.

Yea, it's certainly worth a shot. I'm going to go re-seat the GPU and all the power connections tonight. Fingers crossed. I waited a while for this bad boy. I'll be bummed if I can't figure this out.

You know what, now that I think about it, you may be onto something here. So the MSI card came with a magnetic support beam that you can position under the rear of the card to give it some stability. I'm wondering now if maybe I adjusted the height a bit to much. Maybe it's put some slight upward pressure on the card that is causing the connection to become faulty. Hmmmm. I think I'll remove that thing.

You are an inspiration @Silent_Scone! I removed the brace from under the end of the card and I now have a working 5080. Thank you!

No worries, sometimes it helps to check the simple things. Like I say, was having the same issue when I moved to the waterblock, even though the GPU appeared to be fully seated.

Not ashamed to admit I even removed the block once, as all appeared fine to the eye!
