First Time Builder Seeks Advice

Hi everyone, this is my very first system build and I just wanted to run it by you guys to see what you think about the components that I've chosen, any feedback is appreciated.:o

Due to the higher prices of 8 gig dims, I was thinking of starting out with 16 gigs of memory, then upgrading to 32 gigs then finally to 64 gigs but I've read that you can have compatibility issues even among memory of the same type and model numbers if bought separately, so I decided to buy a 64 gig set in one package i.e. the ( F3-12800CL10Q2-64GBZL )


This is what I have in mind::

CASE - NZXT Switch 810 (Black Edition)

MOTHERBOARD - Asus Rampage IV Extreme

PROCESSOR - Intel Core i7-3930K

CPU COOLER - Corsair Hydro Series (H100)

POWER SUPPLY - Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid 1050W (RS-A50-SPHA-D3)

OPTICAL DRIVE - PIONEER Blu-Ray Burner (BDR-2206B5PK)

HDD - Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB (WD2002FAEX) x 2

SSD - SanDisk Extreme 240GB SATA 6.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch (SDSSDX-240G-G25) x 1

VIDEO CARD - Asus GTX 680 DirectCU II Top (GTX670-DC2T-2GD5) x 1 for now

MEMORY - G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 64GB (8 x 8GB) (F3-12800CL10Q2-64GBZL)

COOLING - NZXT FZ-140mm Red LED FAN (RF-FZ140-R1) x 10

FAN CONTROLLER - Lamptron FC Touch - 30W - 6 Channel w/ Touch Screen

CASE LIGHTING KIT - NZXT Sleeved LED Case Light Kit (Red) 2 Meter (CB-LED20-RD)

OPERATING SYSTEM - [Windows 7 Ultimate


I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means, I just want a very stable beast of a system to use with photo and video editing software, DJ software, casual gaming etc. Any feedback weather good 🙂 or bad :mad: will be appreciated.

take the H100 in push/pull and its a kick ass system.
the memory that suports the mobo can you find in the download section on the asus site on the motherboard, that way you can find the one that suports your mobo 🙂 ( if you are unshure (if you dident already do it 😛 ) )

Thanks for the feedback, due to the case being able to support so many fans, I went ahead and ordered 10 NZXT FZ-140mm Red LED FANS (RF-FZ140-R1). I have 3 mounted on top and the rad mounted below for a push/pull configuration, I'll try to post some pics soon.

That's one of the great things about the Switch 810 case, you can mount up to 6 x 120 or 6 x 140 fans at the top in a push/pull configuration, as for the memory, I decided to go with the
G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 64GB (8 x 8GB) (F3-12800CL10Q2-64GBZL) . I decided to buy the 64 gig package as to have less chance of compatibility issues.

I would like to try overclocking a little, but my real goal is to have a rock solid and stable system overall.:)

Are you saying that you mounted the NZXTs on the case (outside, inside?) and the H100 below them? I assume that you let the original fans on the other side of the H100's radiator... Now, what's the distance between the NZXT's and H100 radiator?

What I'm trying to figure out, how a 140mm fan can work together with the 120mm H100... Yes, some pics would be really helpful at this point...

I can see how that can be a little confusing, this is what I meant :


Here it is with the top cover on.




Here you can see the 3 x 140mm NZXT red LED fans when the top cover is removed.




And here you see the H-100 mounted inside with the original 2 x 120mm fans installed.




And this is the build so far, I'm a little busy these days. 🙂




So you see that I have the 2 x 120mm pushing and 2 of the 3 x 140mm pulling.
I have 9 of the NZXT 140mm red LED fans installed in total plus the 2 on the H-100 for a total of 11 fans.

As you can see, the Switch 810 case makes using 120mm and 140mm fans together in push/pull configuration easy. First I installed the 2 x 120mm fans onto the radiator, then I mounted the rad to the case with all 8 x 120mm mounting holes aligning perfectly with the top plate of the case.

Next I installed the 3 x 140 mm NZXT fans from the top, if you look closely you can see that the 140mm fans are screwed in from below in the H-100 Picture.

Thanks for the feedback, After a couple months of research that's what I came up with. I have most of the components already, all that I need now is the video card, SSD, Memory and Operating System before I can be up and running.

I wanted to put the build together outside of the case first but considering that I still have to get the components listed above, I decided to start installing what I have so far. I installed the power supply, then the processor and the H-100, then I placed the motherboard into the case, the H-100 is in a push/pull configuration. I also installed 9 140mm red led fans plus the 2 that came with the H-100 for a total of 11 fans installed. I've powered up all of the fans just to see the lights, oh I almost forgot, I also installed a NZXT Sleeved LED Case Light Kit (Red) 2 Meter CB-LED20-RD which looks really cool along with the Blu-Ray drive and fan controller that came with the power supply. I think that this is really ambitious for a first build and I am praying that it all works great in the end, It's just a matter of installing the memory, video card, SSD & HDDs and the OS, then pray and press the power button:)

I'll try my best to post a few pics of what it looks like so far.
