Feedback please! AMD PC for 4K Videoediting

Hey guys,

I am building my first AMD System for 4K Videoediting. I've been around with Intel for years and now trying the following AMD setup:

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 16x 3.40GHz
Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3
ASUS PRIME X399-A OR MSI X399 SLI PLUS AMD X399
Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus (Files/cache)
Samsung SSD 960 Pro (OS)

8 x 8 GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4-3000 DIMM CL15 Quad Kit
(Shall I sell it and get 4 x 16 or 2 x 32 GB ? Will it give me better performance? What MHz and latency would you recommand?)

6GB EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 FTW+ Aktiv
(it is a bit older though. Will it be a bottleneck? I am not gaming. But need GPU for color grading and GPU relevant effects. What would alternatively a good CPU option?)

850 Watt Corsair RMx Series RM850x Modular 80+ Gold
(Also a bit older. Will it run fine my setup in terms of power consumption)

I might plan a little OC on that system.

As to what memory I would say anything that is Samsung b-die rated @ 3200 should be good. Total ram is up to you.

1060 won't bottleneck your system, not the fastest graphics there are some encoders that use cuda cores (so manbe upgrade in the future if you find using it as well)

I would be using M2 Nvme drive on this as your primary OS drive, programs and even working files.

The MSI X399 SLI Plus has over the Asus Prime X399
2 more SATA 3 connectors (8vs6)
1 more GPUs supported (4vs3)
2 more USB 2.0 ports
Is 26mm shorter (243mmvs269mm)

They are both similar prices

The Asus Prime X399 has over the MSI X399 SLI Plus

2 more Fan Headers (7vs5)
8 channel sound vs 7.1

After that it is subjective, they are both safe choices for the CPU you have chosen and should perform the same.
I don't have any experience with MSI boards I have not owned one for 20 years or more. I have only recent experience with Asus and Gigabyte (not fan of dual bios)

b-die ram checker

Samsung no longer make b-die, so getting hold of b-die ram is getting increasingly difficult

I have the 2950x with 128gb of Corsair ram - slower ram, 3000Mhz but I am doing machine learning work, I don't actually need speed across the CPU core, where-as video editing is helped by this, so higher spec'd ram in your case is a good idea. The 1950 is a great chip for the price

However, if your populating all the slots, your going to have a harder time keeping the ram speed up, maybe consider using 4 slots instead of 8 for the ram? Check out the QVL for the motherboard you pick, not so much as to ram compatibility but to see how friendly your motherboard is with all ram slots populated
