Connecting speakers (logitech Z5500 5.1) and headset (Steelseries 840, optical)

Hi All,

I currently have a headset that is looped via my speakers, so whenever I turn it on. My speakers are automatically off.

What is the best way to connect this? Speakers on the motherboard, headset too via optical and when you want to switch change the default player in W10?

or

go with optical from the motherboard to Steelseries 840, that also has an optical out and loop that to my speakers.

or?

Suggestions are welcome!

I have an Astro setup, but same idea. Optical to the headphone amp then optical from the headphone amp to the speakers. Works great. I just turn the speakers down when I want to use the headphones.

Whats an astro setup?

On the Steelseries you have this little management console, perhaps there you can configure the output, either optical or speakers?

Astro Gaming makes audio equipment for gamers. I have an older discontinued wireless mixamp from them but it works similar to some of their current models. No management console but similarly it has optical in and out so I use it as a passthrough on the way to the speakers.

It's really not a big deal as the volume control for my speakers is within arm's reach. I'd rather just turn a knob than have to use a console to switch outputs.
